Try them in a wetsuit, neoprene will take the gash first.

your not doing it rightt. seems as though from your 1 sentence explaining your airs is that you lean back too much when you try an air, causing your board to come out over you and fly in the air. the key to airs is to not go for height, but go for length and keep your momentum, and stay over your board.

do you try to "pop" off the lip at all? or just try to continue your line beyond the lip?

admittedly mine are spastic bunny hoops with little function but i suppose you could start off maybe with the grab or double grab to keep more compressed. seems the ones that i make are mostly backside for whatever reason

No offense but if you asking on how to do an air on a forum you are not good enough to even be doing airs. I\'d suggest learning some nice rail to rail surfing. Solidify your bottom turn! Work on tail wafts THEN move to airs. NOTHING is more ugly than someone racing the line and doing a \"bunny hop air\"....YUCK!!!

I started skating when I was 8 (now 20). One of the best things you can do to practice is skate a half-pipe/mini-ramp, it'll teach you body control in the air which is probably what youre looking for. Rail-to-rail surfing is essential though, ever wonder why kelly wins all the time, watch his carves.

This. Yes. Cannot be taught, only learned. The second you stop trying it will come natural, true for most things in surfing.

I've only aired twice and it was pretty sketchy man. I went up the curved part and jumped. Luckily my leash was on and the board followed. I say saddle up and ride man. LOL

Please learn the difference between throwing an air and kicking out the back of a wave. BTW "the curved part" is called the lip.
