Yeah I sured there all summer never got a sinus infection once . I surf Cape May and I get one and I get a case of Broncitis on top of it . I dont think the bronctis was cause by the water. If your gonna Netti just go out and get the bottle . It work 10 times better than the pot

    LOL

Yeah I've been really sick since Friday. I have a soar throat, a really bad cold - went through 4 tissue boxes already, and a little head ache. Being sick sucks! I am normally always healthy because I surf as much as I can and I'm always active. This time it just got me.

I have allergies and because my sinuses are always clogged from my allergies, the ocean water can get trapped in there more easily - leading to infections. This may or may not be the case with you, but it might be worth going to see an allergist. Or, it could just be a water quality issue...

This is a repost from about a year ago... But since were on the subject, here ya go... I would consider myself somewhat of an "authority" on this subject...

Sinus infections are something I know about all to well... I get them all the time after I surf, and trust me I know how much they suck. That being said, I do have a few things that really help, they may seem out there, but they work wonders.

    1. Apple Cider Vinegar, Lemon, and honey in boiling water. Mix in about a tablespoon or 2 or apple cider vinegar (the good unfiltered stuff, Bragg's is the best), a quater of a lemon, and a good dose of honey... Gargle and drink it... This is probably the best thing you can drink, period. The health benifits of this drank are ridiculous. Plus it works wonders with a sore throat, and will really help to open up your sinuses.

    2. Cayanne Pepper... Mix a good amount of cayanne pepper in some warm water and gargle it. People have been using cayanne to treat sinus infections for thousands of years, It works wonders! Also as a last resort you can lay out a little bump of cayanne and snort it ... Yes. I said snort it.. Its a last resort, but it never fails, your sinus infection will be gone in seconds. Also using a neti pot with some cayanne mixed in works wonders!

    3. Raw Garlic... Its another cure that never fails. Just grab a clove, chew it up good, and hold it in your mouth/throat for as long as you can. It burns really really bad, but afterwards your sinuses will really open up... Also ingesting the garlic will help combat the infection. Garlic is the most powerful natural antiviral in the world!

When I have a sinus infection I always do all 3 of these. If its not gone the next day, I snort the cayanne and that literally never fails. I always try to stay away from any over the counter medicine, but mucinex really helps sinus infections too.

Anyways... Do what I told you and your sinus infection will be gone in no time!!! Trust me...

P.S. Stay away from dairy projects when you have a sinus infection, it thickens the mucus and will only make your infection work.

True... when I was a science teacher we did an experiment where we grew bacteria in a petri dish, then added different natural "antibacterial" agents. By far the most effective was raw garlic.

Tell that to your girlfriend as you lay in bed next to her stinking up the room.

Snorting cayenne has got to be fun!
I know they make some pepper sinus sprays, but I'm sure its diluted...

Also, like boner said, dairy will thicken mucus, and so will animal proteins and wheat proteins - these things are harder to digest so the body makes more mucus to help the process. If you limit those things while your having an infection it will help clear things out sooner. Like Boner, I consider myself pretty well versed in the sinus issue realm.

Guys, this really sounds like you are are suffering from ALLERGIES, not ocean induced sinus infections. Most people only really think of the spring as allergy season, but that is not the case. spring brings tree pollen. Fall is grass/weed pollen time. You know all those yellow flowers on the dunes and those short weedy plants that grow in vacant lots, sidewalk cracks and every other inch of habitable space? They are Seaside goldenrod and mugwort, the banes of my existence. As a result of these demon plants(and obviously others), I've had clogged sinuses from Sept-November since the day I was born. Allergies do cause ear infections, but as a secondary result of sinus drip that you may not even notice that you have even after the ear infection sets in.

Here is how you will know that it is allergies:
    -If your snot is clear
-If it lasts more than a week.
-if there is any type of associated throat itch
-if days with high humidity bring relief
-if it is occurring mostly on sunny days

BonerSurfs...i remember that post from a year ago because I used the cayanne pepper one. I started getting a sore throat, so I gargled with hot sauce that had cayanne as the main ingredient...a couple gargles and it went away. Thanks, that was helpful info.

I normally don't get sick. I work outside and am exposed to the elements on a daily basis. I've never had allergies before. I went to the doctors about 5 weeks ago and he gave me amoxicillen that i took for a week. I don't know why my sinuses keep getting stopped up and I guess I really can't tell if it's from surfing or not. I guess the only way to tell would be to not surf, but I'd rather just deal with it than not surf..

i sort of accidentally discovered the wasabi helps with my sinuses while eating sushi. i don't mind the taste, so i usually take a quarter sized clump and just eat it. it burns for a little bit, but your sinuses really open up afterwards

Funny thing... I started surfing as a kid partly BECAUSE of my bad allergies... it was the only time I felt good during the summer. Sneezing, itchy back of the throat, itchy eyes that would swell almost shut. Surfing would make me feel almost normal again. I'd stay in the water all day just to to get relief from that.

Then I got hooked on surfing and that was all she wrote...

Ya, the garlic isn't too bad, it burns, but only for a few seconds. The cayenne snorting on the other hand, that one really gets ya.

I remember the first time I did it. I was pretty much desperate to get rid of a sinus infection and nothing was working. Then i read somewhere that snorting cayenne would cure sinus infection in seconds. So I laid out a tiny little bump for each nostril and just went for it. Its really one of those "What the **** did I just do to myself" feelings a second afterward. It just burns in your sinuses really really bad for about a min. Rolling around on the floor, cursing yourself for what you did is pretty much a given. Anyways, after it burnt for a about thirty seconds to a min, My sinus infection was completly gone. I had gone from having the worst sinus infection of my life, to 100% cured in less than a min. I have since done this again a few times, and it never fails.

    It sucks, but it works!
