KELLY SLATER: Ke11y back to KS10

Man that's insane. Somewhat complicated sounding, but there really is no excuse for botching something like this haha.

 

that's some serious bs...what happens if kelly doesn't win another heat this season (exceedingly unlikely) & owen doesn't win either or both events? is someone else crowned? is that the "surf off" scenario?

i think this is going to get kelly fired up & he'll end up going on a tear for the rest of the year, just to make a point.

 

That is absurd. How do you mess that up? If all he has to do is win one heat, he shouldn't have a problem seeing as how he's not human.

 

that's ridiculous. If I were the ASP I would have just kept it quiet and let Kelly win another heat to make it official. To answer the question above. No, someone else will not be crowned.

3 things have to happen for Owen to get it:

1. Kelly doesn't win another heat
2. Owen has to win in San Fran and @ pipe
3. Owen beats Slates in a surf off

Otherwise Slater is the champ... again.

 

haha yea i just saw this on surfline. What a bunch of dunces. Even though it's exceedingly unlikely, y'all gotta admit that "Surf Off" between Ke10y and Owen at Pipe would be sick! Especially if it's firing!

 

Wow, everyone makes mistakes, but this is definitely an embarrassing one for ASP.

 

Everyone knows surfers don't go to school and aren't very good at math. This just proves it!!!!

 

Ridiculousness...but I'd say Kelly will be fired up about it and make it point to win. Not that anyone else has a chance anyhow (IMO).

 

Especially embarrassing because of all the recent hoopla regarding how complicated the scoring is. Now they can't even figure it out. I find that hysterical.

 

How do you not do, whatever recheck that was done, before the official announcement. Total embarrassment. Kelly gonna win a heat, though a surf off, at pipe no less, would be awesome!!!!

 

I HOPE owen wins and takes it. HOPE.. im a slater fan but Owen really deserves it.. slaters getting a little over rated.

 

I hope each year for someone else to take 1st as well, but Slater is anything but overrated. That guy is so dedicated and so technical in and out of the water. If he's not surfing he's studying each wave of each heat, or determining which shape and which fins work best down to the centimeter of foam or fiberglass.

He does have a natural ability to surf well, but it's his extra busy work that places him way ahead of the competition.

 

Can't argue with that.

C'mon now. All surfers are great at math from all the years of selling grams, eight's, quarters & Halves. It's the english grammar that is sub par, for example this forum.
But yes, the ASP is dumb!

 

The problem, from how I see it, is they assumed the computer program that processed all the rankings and claimed Kelly is the world champion was correct. However, there was a small error in the algorithm... Fortunately, there was some folks that properly challenged the claim.

 

No matter how you slice it, the ASP showed why they can't be taken seriously as a sanctioning body. They were so quick to get the word out to grab any media attention they could get from Ke11y's win and now they wind up looking arse backwards. What is worse is that the heat win and celebration afterwards was such an emotional moment in surf history - Ke11y's last minute win, the walk up the beach, on the anniversary of AI's death, a speechless champ - and the whole thing means nothing.

Really is a shame. He'11 get it, no doubt, but the magic of the moment is gone.

And the longer the contest is put on hold, the more the mainstream media is going to pick up on the error and make all us surfers look like Jeff Spicoli.

 

yeah the points systems weird but 10 time,soon to be 11 time champions are not over rated,especially in an individual sport
