bullcrap. i'll be 31 this winter & do 2 sessions a day whenever possible w/ no loss of surfing ability. you just gotta be in shape. if you're out of shape, then it'll suck. but that's true at any age.
I tried that Crossfit, it is a good workout...but the idea i came away from it with was that you have to work yourself so hard that you get sick. IMO, that's really not neccesary. sure, it cuts down on the time of workouts, but seems to me, that will just bulk you up. I did P90X a couple times through, and thought it was a much more well-rounded program and got me to do Yoga once a week, which i think has helped my flexibility and breathing. I've been slacking, though...still not completely out of shape, but I could be in better shape now than I am...Smoking will def not help you, but I can't talk...i chew Copenhagen, mainly because I'm addicted to nicotine, but don't want to hurt my lungs...already did that with smoking Newports for 7 years and the ganj.
I almost never do 2 sessions anymore (unless its summer and the days are long and warm). Smoking and eating crap is all good...genetics is 95% in the game of life. And yes eating pusssy will help.
Couldn't even make it out to the lineup tonight...I have a cold on top of all this.... This is the month I quit!
I don't smoke, so can't really say too much about that. My mom does and has for the better part of 50 years. I doubt she'll ever quit. She's tried every tool out there, but I don't think she wants to quit. On the other hand, my friend's grandfather quit smoking cold turkey when he was like 82. Every night his wife would clean out his ashtray and one night she went to do it and it was empty. He says to her in his thick Irish brogue, "Ahh, didn't I tell ya, I quit smoking." He did too. So, I think it really has to do with wanting to quit. Good luck with it, bambino. As for staying in shape - I'm in a similar boat. P90 and P90x are really good and yoga helps a lot too. I'm just having a hard time staying on track because of my work schedule, but I definitely try to get in at least 30-60 min 3-5 days a week in addition to surfing. This week has been a bad one.
Yoga, pilates, and a bike. That is all you need. Do at least one them every other day for about 30-40 minutes. And kick the cancer sticks bro.
I smoked over a pack a day for 15 years. I used Chantix to stop. It was the only thing to work for me and it made it a lot easier than I had imagined. It's been over 3 years now. Some people react badly to chantix (like my wife, who instead stopped cold turkey), but I was fine. I took it for two weeks will still smoking, and by the end of those two weeks, smoking was just gross to me. Then I stopped with the chantix the day after my last smoke and never been back. Though, the biggest thing, like with any addiction, is the decision to quit. If you're not ready, it's not gonna happen. For working out, I just have a curl bar in my basement. I use that and do a ton of sit-ups and push-ups. Try the push-ups with different hand placements and resting your feet at different heights - this will focus the work on different muscle groups. Like with your feet up on the back of a couch, you can get a pretty darn good shoulder workout.
Other than the shortness of breath and other side effects of smoking, I think if I knew would be able to smoke until I was 82 and still be above ground I would never have stopped, lol.
Yeah man, That's what I did. Now I'm a coach. Best shape of my life at 40....By a long shot. P90X that is... http://www.teamzapthefat.com Regards, Dean M
Lol...the only thing is, you won't know until your either 50 with lung cancer or 82 without it. My gramps lived to around 85 and smoked non-stop. He did end up getting lung cancer in the end, but at that point, he was playing with house money. On the other hand, maybe if he hadn't smoked, he would have lived to be 100. Who knows? Good for you on quitting, and everyone else on the board who has. Watching my mom try and fail so much, it must be a tough habit to break.
uh, yeah. first quit smoking. clean-up your diet. start slow with the exercise. i mean really slow like going for a 1/2 hour WALK every day, not a jog. if your joints are up for it, start with some calisthenics (pushups, situps, core work, pullups, etc). stay focused, positive, and don't give up! 3 days road work (walking, jogging, biking) 2 days calisthenics, per week. Keeping fit is 60% mental, 20% diet, 15% genetics, 5% exercise. Do work!
get out and paddle as much as you can. it's obviously better for surfing but i think it's better than the gym for your overall health too. especially in a wetsuit in the cold. go out when it's knee high and paddle until your arms fall off. rest for a couple minutes and do it again. get as many popups as you can. be active!
