    Hi folks,

I'm coming out to LA the first weekend in January and I'd like to try and surf just once while I'm there. Are there any beaches that allow you to rent boards at the beach? I'll have a small rental car so won't be able to get one inland and bring it to the beach.

Sure you will. Let your board ride shotgun w/ the seat back.

That's true, I used to fit my 8'6 in my Ford Escort. But it's best not to crap up a rental car with surf wax and sand anyway.

    welcome to lala land

weeeelllll....unless you have a "bring it back clean" clause in yer rental agreement, wax and sand are the rental company's problem (and you can always rinse off the board...and yer feet and put a hotel towel down). many beaches near population centers (HB, Santa Monica, etc) will have a rental either on the beach or at one of the many surf shops within walking distance of the beach. it depends what part of "LA" you mean...los angeles proper? lax? OC? Inland? san berdoo?

Well here's the thing, I'm staying in Hollywood and so the only time really I will have to surf is after arriving at LAX and before check-in. So a beach just west or west-north of the airport would be ideal.

Zuma Jay boardhouse in Santa Monica has some good "demo boards" to rent. Like $35 bux a day.

Cool, so in early January will a 3/2 wetsuit be okay? Do I need booties and a hood?

Check the SwellInfo forecast for the spot you plan to surf. Check to see what the water temperature is, and plan for it to be colder. A 3/2 would not be the best call if the temperature drops into the low 50's.

Try Malibu Surf Shack. Its not that far froom Hollywood. I rented there last February. The surf is smaller in Malibu in the winter alas less crowds. The water is also cleaner and the wave is awwesome. They also rent wetsuits. but if a nice north swell is big enough to wrap around it can be great. One day only had 3 people on it and the next only 20 and lots of girls.

Thanks everybody. I ended up renting at ZJ Boarding house in Santa Monica and surfed at Sunset Beach. Great conditions, had a blast. Of course the rental car is trashed...
