you know, you don't HAVE to go to oahu and surf the NS. There are other islands that get waves. If you have a modicum of common sense/respect in the water, 99% you'll have fun.

haha yea thats funny! and so true! I have done a bit of traveling over the last 15 yrs and never really had much issues with getting hassled saw a few instances and was in the middle of a few confrontations mostly in Mexico and with an ex-pat who thought I was getting too many waves and he hadnt gotten his yet! Haha but I travel or at least surf solo keep to myself and wait my turn(usually) even in HI have had some good experiences except for one local at pipe. But thats funny I am sure in nj in summer if we hassled anyone they would tell the lifeguard and the state police boat would come rushing in and we would be arrested on some bogus charge.. Actually happened to me when I hassled a lifguard in a surf zone yrs ago when my girl was on a body board with fins and he came out on a jet ski to kick her out. I saw red and flipped my lid cause thats all it would take for her to bail on trying and she was having fun in the summer chop and slop guard called the troopers and they came in on thier boat was pretty humerous the beach was booing the guard etcc..

Maybe you were met with negativity by the French cause you're a typical ugly American traveler. Just like you want respect from outsiders when they visit your home (or break), they want the same. But if you're walking around like 'Hey, you people should speak English 'cause my country saved your @sses'. then, hey, you know what, maybe you deserve to be treated like a jerkoff. And maybe you didn't even realize you projecting that attitude - like you said, "vague and mildly ignorant".

I've traveled and surfed in France many times - and not once was I met will any negativity or localism.

I agree completely with this statement. First, Hawaii was attacked because we had a military base there. Since we stopped importing Japanese supplies, they attacked that US military base. Otherwise, Japan wouldn't have attacked them. Now, how we made them a state was messed up too. If we didn't do it, I'm sure the Brits would have becasue they liked ruling every country know to man.

Now, I've only had good experiences with the French. Its like headrow stated above. Most Americans travel to France and expect them to speak English. You are in their country. Just like we can't stand people who just speak Spanish here and don't bother to speak English. You have to look at it from their perspective and ask yourself how you would act in the same situation. All the French were polite to me and my family when we even talked to them in English. I don't know where all the French hatred comes from. Maybe because of the moronic freedom fries talk years ago, lol. Now, if you are talking about French Canadians, that is a whole other ballgame.

Guys, I gotta tell ya. You are worrying waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much about localism. I've been to Oahu and Kauaii 6 or 7 times now and I have NEVER been met with anything but aloha. Just don't be a **** and you will not have any problems. If this nonsense prevents you from visiting the paradise that is Hawaii, you are out of your mind.

I'm sure you're a nice guy but you really are out of touch (to say the least). People don't like to be colonized. It doesn't matter what happens in an alternate world, or that you may think you are "taking good care of them". If you showed up in Hawaii and rubbed it in and expected them to thank you... well... no wonder you got a negative vibe.
Wherever you go, if you leave your attitude home, people can be really nice. You'd be surprised...

I was refraining from posting to this stupid thread about the fight...I mean who f'n cares - I know I don't...so this post is nothing about the stupid North Shore drama, but after watching the video posted by FRANYFINGERS I felt the need to comment about that. Here at the OBX if the lifeguards put up the red flags then no swimmers are allowed in but surfers are more than welcome to enter the water (ability depending). After 5:00 the lifeguards go away and it is swim-at-your-own-risk time and it just shocked me to see how the lifeguards were panicking about the surfers when it was obvious that their ability level could handle the size. I know they are just trying to keep everyone safe, but geez, it wasn't like there was only one guy out there. After seeing the girl get rescued and the text saying surfers should always be full time lifeguards it made me think how true that statement really is. I have pulled around 6 or 7 people out of rips in the past 3 years alone; 2 of which was when the lifeguards were present the others they were not. Surfing should not be a crime; it is just another way to enjoy the beach. I took a trip to the northeast this summer and oddly enough actually visited the exact beach in the video - the waves were nothing like in this video - but being the surfer I am, I had to bodysurf a few just to say I "surfed" a wave there. I actually didn't even notice if there were lifeguards there but obviously there were. Anyways, I guess what I am trying to get at is...There is no off duty when it comes to being a surfer, yeah it's fun and it's more or less a solo hobby but keep your eyes peeled for the ones that do not know the ocean like you do. You might save their life.

God can anybody read anymore? Whats all the talk about France, Zach was talking about WW2 not a problem with the French or Hawaiians today. And Hawaii would have been colonized by the Japanese without the influence of the US. The Japanese had already subjugated the entire south Pacific and yes they would have moved into the Hawaiian Islands with no doubt. If they didn't eventually Russia would have. It isnt right or wrong it just is, smaller weaker countries fall under the influence of the nearest and most powerful countries. It shouldn't be rubbed in anyones face but it is fact so stop being so politically correct you have the right to be proud of your country ( even in the face of past mistakes) without the worry that someone is going to get their feelings hurt. As far as surfing in another country just treat people the way you want to be treated and 90 % of the issues wouldnt happen.

Apparently the people worried about localism aren't reading any posts from people who've lived there. Sometimes life aint like what you read in magazines or watch on youtube. keep worrying I guess...

Thats a great video I have seen it before but was great to see it again! Yea see how excited the guards and cops got pathetic! Fat B@**h lifeguard saying I told ya so~ Arrested for filming ha..Then at 5 cops and guards leave summer time in the NE is pathetic. I took this summer off due to an injury and it was actually liberating not to stress over guards and crowds parking etc.. Fortunatley by the time I could get back into the water the waves started pumping and theres been decent surf since Sept.. If I could keep Jersey cold year round I would do it cause its amazing how many summer kooks there are anymore!! Makes me kinda glad I am older cause its only gonna get worse!

one flaw to that is the pipe line up has 50 some odd people in it. In a crowd of 50 people you can easily avoid a person you don't want to see but it is an interesting though. I don't really know what to think of the whole situation to be honest, it doesn't make sense

    THANK YOU!!!!

Not only did i NEVER say i have ever been to france, I was speaking STRICTLY on the french I have encountered visiting MY COUNTRY. Living, working and surfing in SAN DIEGO... not france.... so while i CANT WAIT to go to france and experience it myself, I have had policitcal, cultulral and surf related debates with FRENCH guys visiting american soil... so with that being said my friend, those particular people can kiss my as$.... I would NEVER go to france and speak on cooking, wine or what have you... but dont ever, ever, ever ever come over to San Diego from France and hate on my counties leadership, military or ANYTHING else.... I would never step on your toes, so leave mine alone///

Re-read my post/ Never been to france...

Been to HI... Read every publication available to tourists there and they will talk about how everything wasin japanese prior to WW2, and after pearl harbor, you know the rest.... dont overlook what I was Actually speaking of...

I cant wait to go to france and embrace their culture.... thats not what I was saying.... im talking to all the french who love us so much. Live on our soil, drink our FAR BETTER WINE, surf our world class waves but want to tell me about their perfect french world... read between the lines. and pay attention to detail! Cheers.
