I bought two boards from a local shaper and one was $400. and the other was $450. They were both shortboards.

Legit shapers charge about $100 per foot for a custom board.
Some shapers will charge less to get the business but then complain they don't make any money with all the time they spend on a custom board...
Stock boards are less, they are not as labor intensive as customs, unless they have really nice artwork or glass jobs.

The old saying, "you get what you pay for". My base price is $100 per foot for a white board whether it's eps, pu foam, poly or epoxy sanded finish fins included. Color, pinlines, gloss etc. is a little more due to more work. What you get from a good local shaper is translating the riders size, ability, age, mainly winter surf or summer and listening to what their previous boards do and don't do. Then creating a custom board from scratch that will fit the surfer like a glove.I always try to have boards on hand so cutomers can try them free of charge for a month if necessary then they have a starting point to get something custom also they get a feel for my boards. All the materials I use are top quality from Greenlight and other sources which makes a stronger long lasting product but they are more expensive. Throw into the mix I've been surfing since 1969 and making boards for many years, not just shaping I mean start to finish boards. Now $600 may sound expensive for a custom 6' hp shortboard but mix together cost of materials, local knowledge of waves, years and years of building quality boards then add the 2 to 3 weeks for me to make the board that breaks down to $300 or less per week then take out the cost of materials. Hopefully this will give you a better understanding of what it takes to make a quality product and a better perspective on the total cost for a local board
