should see something by the end of the work week. Its a small storm in circumference , but the track right now is looking pretty good.

so if this depression keeps on the predicted track, how long will it take for the swells to start rolling up on the coast ?

should start to see some bertha swell fill in on Thursday and into Friday. Should have some bertha swell hold into the weekend. Hopefully winds cooperate.

My guess is only exposed breaks will get it, WB, maybe washout and def. north of WB. The swell window is decreasing rapidly for this area, it will take alot of energy to get here from the track it is taking and the circumference of the storm. Looks like the North East will yet again grab another classic swell. Like the moderator says, winds will be the determinant.

would be an awesome scenario if it stall off the mid atlantic and just churns for days in the warm gulf stream waters.

Damn thing heads here the weekend I'm going to Philly...

Post script: I love that people on here will talk about swells, forcasting etc. Certain unamed sites have commenters that go nuts with superstition that you are even mentioning any chance there will be a hint of a wave in the future. Of course this is after they dispense with the middle school insults.

the guy on the weather channel just said that exact thing (and he mentioned the possibility of surf for the east coast!!). hopefully that will hold up so we can get some long needed waves down here.

Looks to be headed for a cat 3 or 4 again from these latest images, the amazing thing is the NHC predicted the path right so far, but as for strength, there long term is beyond uncertain..

Now that Bertha is intensifying, and is gonna slow down for a few days around Bermuda, what does that mean for the surf size around topsail? or are the swell charts on the conservative side?

Stupid question, because I have never surfed a real hurricane swell. Wouldn't the winds make any swell super ****ty. Like incredibly rough and hard to ride?

Are you kidding me Eclipse??? I think you need to do a little research on how swell/waves are made. Strong winds far away = > fetch and incresed wave periods... If this system truly does slow down, how long do you think the swell will stick around Mr. mediator?? You still looking for the swell to fill in tomorrow evening into Friday AM?

The wind is what generates the swell. The stronger the wind, the more swell is produced. The conditions at the beaches will be determined by the coastal winds. So, if the coastal winds are light are offshore, then conditions are good.

Breyn, while I don't appreciate the rudeness, thanks for the info. And thanks Swellinfo for the un-hostile explanation.

Why comment on and/or try to explain something you have never experienced?

Wind = waves. The harder the wind the bigger the waves. The longer the wind has been blowing and the farther it has traveled over the ocean = bigger and longer swell period waves. Pretty simple stuff.

eclipse it wasn't a stupid question. anyone who surfs the myrtle area knows that wind is our problem getting good waves. yes long period wind driven swell is one thing, but late morning cross winds and heat created wind is very problematic. that is going to be the biggest issue for us tomorrow. there should be enough groundswell for fun waist to stomach waves, but the fact that low tide is well after sun-up means the waves will be choppy and dumpy/closing out. let's just pray it gets here then start being negative...
