About the electric keys, I know someone who surfs with the electric fob in his suit and the key still works
lol until the one day when it doesn't...seriously, when I was in HS 20 yrs ago the local dirtbags would wait until a swell hit and they would "harvest the crop" if your car was known, they'd leave it be, everyone else was fair game. Everyone knows or knew back then who they are. Just keep the electronic fob in an empty gatorade bottle and leave it or put undr driftwood etc.
If you have an "electric key" chances are you were able to afford a nice car. Go to the dealership, ask them to make you an "emergency key" that you can take into the water. I had to order mine, it took 72 hours. Brought in my key and they made a copy of it in 10 minutes. $13.57 after tax. I surf much better knowing my car will more likely than not be there when i get back.
That sucks man, hate thieves. My last 2 vehicles (Fords) I have the keypad on the door. It's a $ 200 option, but was with the XLT package on each that I purchased. I would actually pay the $ 200 as an add it's that convenient.
That sucks man, but you should be able to go to a dealership and get a duplicate key made with the VIN number. Might have to show some proof of ownership, like an ID and your insurance card, but at least you can go pick your car up if you haven't already.
Maybe leave a note taped to your window reading "smile, you're being video recorded"... might be enough to make a crook think its not worth it.... lol.
I asked Honda about this when I purchased my Fit, and they told me that it's "electronic keys only" from now on. I didn't care enough to dig deeper, but maybe this is actually true for some newer models. As a former gas tank hiding spot victim myself, I HATE having the electronic key. Sure, there are plenty of tricks, but it always feels better to have the thing inside your shorts or wettie. I once thought about the sand burial trick but was terrified that I would somehow not be able to find them again. Maybe we shouldn't share too many tricks on here, however, I would bet plenty of would-be thieves search for this type of thread...or maybe I'm just paranoid!
What year is your fit? My last two Honda's each came with 2 electronic keys and 1 valet key, the valet key I can take w/ me to the water.
I have a blue ipod nano but im not your guy ive never robbed anyone so dont punch me in the throat please
down by the seaside... my valet key starts the car, but won't open the trunk. (valets need to drive the car). what i get is an emergency door only key much in the vein of the type AAA makes for its customers out of plastic (mine is metal) and it only cost me 6 bucks from toyota. i see folks hide keys where i go, but my beach is far away from casual passers-by and maybe there it's a safer bet that the only peeps there are surfers and other "honest" people...hope ya get yer $hit back...
my truck came with 2 main keys with the key fob and then it came with like 10 spare keys that the guy who owned it before my family had hidden and when ever my dad or i go to change the oil or do something under the car we always found a spare key. but i like to back into my parking spot at the beach and then put the tailgat down and then put the key in the back of my trailer hitch and then i would leave it be and then go surf.
If you have a hitch this seems like a good way to take care of your things. http://www.shopatron.com/products/productdetail/HitchSafe/part_number=HS7000/10094.0.1.1.0.0.0.0.0?
#19 darippah - you've got the right idea - I had a 2 dollar key made that will only unlock the door (won't run the car), and I keep it on a chain around my neck (too short to come over my head) - it unlocks the door, and the electronic key is hiodden in my car - it's easy as sh*t! In the summer, I secure the "unlock" key in my board shorts!
I really have a bigger problem - I haven't gotten wet in......damn...I can't even remember when I've gotten surf on a weekend (all I can do right now)!
How 'bout hiding it somewhere 100 or 200 yards away from your truck? Not many people going to creep and follow you to see if you drop your keys.
This is by far the best key hiding trick! I had something like this on my old truck, not only did I never worry again about getting robbed, but it also helped me out a few times when I locked my keys inside by mistake. I just left an extra key in there the whole time. The only down side is trying to see the combo when you get out of the water after dark, one time in the winter I had to wait until cars drove by to see the combo to unlock it...it was freezing without my gloves on and could hardly turn the key to open the door.... from then on I left an LED light on my windshield to help. Sometimes you can find them for cheap on ebay... well worth the money... my new truck does not have a hitch... yet... or I would still be using it.
Had the same thing happen to me in Belmar. Bastard swiped my new oakleys, blackberry, and my wallet. He also rang up 300 dollars at a game stop in neptune. Went and bought a water wallet on amazon. Its a waterproof pouch to keep electronic keys in. 18 dollars and the lanyard goes right around my neck. Don't even notice it under my wetsuit.
