Yeah comfort is nice. But I just don't ahve the character to devote this human existence chasing money working for people I want to cut. I hope I can avoid being destitute but I am preparing.

Thanks Chad for your input and time. I wish you luck and admire your courage to turn your back on the BS. Good luck.

No I'm not joking. Mr. Tropic I don't want to be homeless but you never know. Anything can happen to anyone. No one is immune to losing it all. Boom one day everything can change. Osvaldo Mecado, do you know him....ahhh no matter.....

Thanks Tropic for your contribution and time.

Yeah Mexico has always tugged at my heartstrings.....The romaticized gringo running from something....from anything up north and finding an existence south of the border. But man, those federales bug me out.

Thanks for your insight Avonsurfer. Hey, when I lived in the Outer Banks(northern) back in the early 2000's, I heard Avon was a crazy substance abuse heaven. Anything to them rumors? I rarely went south of Rodanthe so what do I know. Don't you just love reading the court reports in the Coastland Times?

I agree... and after college, job, work my butt off; my mom who worked 2 jobs her whole life had a stroke Cec 23. '09. Though she had medicare, secure horizon, and gap ins, bled every dime from her and most of my savings before she 'qualified' for Medicaid.
Quick way of putting $, the good ole' USA, and happiness into REAL perspective.
Im recovering, but if Im going to be poor in a blink of an eye... Im not wasting time in a country that takes, takes, takes, and dosent give to the deserving ie the hard working tax paying citizens.
Screw this popstand... a days pay for a days work, warm weather, fighting monkeys for scraps, big ole bugs, surf, beach... Costa Rica here I come!

If all else, Id rather be broke in CR than USA

Nope not joking... there are alot of surfers in the rincon and aguadilla area who take refuge in the abandon buildings in aguadilla ( trust me there are plenty of them) They get by (doing surf lessions or whatever) so if your fine with surfing some world class surf breaks being your only luxury and you dont mind sleeping with cockrouches than its actually not that bad place to be a bum. Yea good luck trying to pull that sh*t in cali or oahu.... you would with out a doubt have some big problems.

Ripturbo, Thanks for the advice. That is an excellent suggestion. Thank you. I guess it's worked for you as you appear extremely intelligent. Again, thanks for the advice.

You make it sound like one could surf world class waves without a hundred locals on sponges and surfboards sitting next to you. For one thing, Aguadilla only breaks on the largest swells, a few times each winter.
Homeless is one thing but I think the original poster kinda meant "feral"...a local Puerto Rican could take refuge in an abandoned building in a city like that, but you or I, or South Jetty Bill? You really want to live like that?
I'd take deep Mexico if SJB is really looking to live on the cheap. Their peso makes your few bucks go along way.

I could debate you on your point of world class waves, too. It may seem like world class when you're used to seeing typical US coastal waves, but a lot of the waves here are short and not world class, compared to long point breaks like Rincon, Ca., Super Bank, Jeffrey's Bay, Trestles, Malibu, Mexican point breaks, and a slew of other true world class waves.
Not to say it doesn't get epic here, it does sometimes, but not consistently, hence not truly world class. Just my opinion.

I would say in or around South Africa, Durban area or Namibia. You could still get by with speaking English. Or possibly Australia, Indo etc. If I am really going to be "homeless" then climate would play a major part and that would probably rule out Australia as the last time I was there I froze my arse off.

If I had a time machine I would probably go back to the 60's, Southern California or Hawaii. Second choice would be the stone age. Living among the dinosaurs would have been pretty cool even though the surf probably would have been rather limited and your life expectancy likewise.

you don't have to be homeless. Almost all surf destinations have resorts / hotels / camps / hostels / whatever. They all need seasonal and year-round help. Often times you can live there for free and pull a pay check.

Another option- get a van and drive down to central america. Hell, show up wherever and buy something cheap. If your lodging is your wheels, you are not homeless, but you sure are free to roam. A friend of mine lived out of a 90 something subaru for 6 months in new zealand.

All I have to say is DO IT! You can always come back to reality if you run out of cash or sanity.

Awww ripturbo don't be upset. Come back. You need a hug. Dude, you insulted me and now are upset. I didn't even insult back. Trust me, I didn't insult back. You should have ran into me when I was drinking. I could do some verbal assaulting. Then you did it again ripturbo. You called everyone losers. I am a loser but these fine people are not. Rip, don't get defensive and join in on the love chats. I will accept you and so will the others. C'mere big guy and give us a hug.

Thanks for your input Tropic Surfer, Havanasand, leethestud and superfish. I appreciate your time and effort. TS, you sold me off Puerto Rico. Too many people, probably not consistent enough, and even though the Ricans in Jersey just love me, the Puerto Rican locals would gringo-beat me...or at least try ..cause I don't take no guff...He's Big Bear !!

Now how cold is too cold. I don't know....I'm not a lover of heat. I kind of dig the cold...sort of.....at least I used to. If Vancouver was a tad warmer and dryer, that would have potential. I could live in the Downtown Eastside and befriend the Brewhaffers(yeah I know that's not their real names) and have them take me to the good spots on their boat. Canada is the best, ya know. They actually live in a free country. Plus being a Jersey dude, I can easily push Canadians around.

South Africa has potential.....ahhh if this just happened sooner. I could live at J-Bay with Dora. Though I have the feeling Dora is one of them, "Don't meet your idols you may be disappointed" types. I would still dig listening to that dude go off about society. Oh well a forgotten era.....

Havana thnaks for the time machine response. First one DING DING DING you get a prize..... Me, I'd go to Ditch Plains in 1925 to start. Visit Harvey Cedars in 1987. NSW Austarlia in the late 1940's. Southern California in early 1950's then work my way north all the way to Seaside Oregon. REMEMEBER YOU CAN BRING MODERN DAY EQUIPMENT WITH YOU. Lets see, Ireland in the late 80's. Then I'd do quick historically driven trips throughout the world during certain historical events. Oh I'd go to J-Bay anytime before crowds....The Outer Banks during the civil war.....Oh shoot I'd go everywhere at all sorts of time periods...Someone get on that time machine will ya's

yeah probably with his hand out to the taxpayer explaining how he's entitled to food and sheltar because he's an American. He'll just say my plan to NOT work and become homeless and surf all day didn't work out so good and we'll pay for him to go on welfair and foodstamps.

BTW: if you're not working how are you going to buy surfboards? eat? buy gas to get to the break?

Listen y'all you pay taxes. Even if there were no Food Stamps and Welfare, do you really think you'd be paying less taxes? NON !!! Everybody complains about taxes. But everyone loves the Federal government when a hurricane destroys your town. Everyone wants the police, roads, emergency medical services, and all that good stuff. But they all complain about taxes and the government. You can have the police. I don't need them. See that would save y'all a few bucks, right

Most people who complain about social saftey nets are conservatives who supposedly love Jesus. They love Jesus but ACT NOTHING LIKE JESUS.......Jesus didn't hate the poor and downtrodden like your average conservative.

Jesus loves surfers who turn their back and reject modern society. Jesus doesn't like wealthy conservative politicians and their corporate pals. If you are rich and right wing...you are greedy and evil. If you are middle-class or below and are conservative...you are clueless.

Any true surfer would never be upset at someone going feral. That should be respected. The surf world remembers and embraces the adventurous.......the Naughton and Peterson's......not your average joe who's worried about the poor getting assistance while he 9-5's his life away.....

Wally, turn on, tune in and drop out.........and take me to Iceland !!!
