Ok maybe I was a tad togue-in-cheek with the greatest American who ever lived.....but actually I'm not sure. Who was greater? Politicians are completely evil. Dr. King had his vices......The founding fathers were slave-owning fornicating, drunks. Mainsteam sports stars are tools. My daddy is a great American, and so is Howard Stern, but I don't know. Maybe Dora was the greatest American to ever lived. Gosh if we listened to him maybe people like Ihatelongboarders wouldn't be here today.
the root of 99% or our local problems today are very simple....there are no enforcers anymore. lineups are too crowded? that's not an issue if there are some enforcers in the lineup to keep things sane. It all goes back to that. When guys started getting arrested for enforcing the rules, chaos reigned.
As the previous comments go to prove, Miki still generates controversy even ten years after his death. Speaking of which you are all cordially invited to visit the only website authorized by Miki: http://www.mikidora.com . The site will eventually contain a permanent online repository of letters, emails, faxes, photos and stories about Miki Dora, his life, his surfing and his contribution to surfing rich history. In the meantime you are also invited to take a look at the MikiDora.Com Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/MikiDoraCom/128393610615154 . Cheers, Bob Feigel (Surfwriter.net)
I don’t know as much about Dora as I should but, he doesn’t sound very heroic or patriotic. If you victimize people to facilitate your own personal gain you’re a scumbag. All the foresight, style, and ripping in the world can’t cure scumbag.
I know this discussion is not about whether Dora was a jerk or not (it's supposed to be about whether he's a great American or not), but a kid in my town who's a very talented college-aged surfer once said a very similar thing to what Doug said... "There's more to being a good surfer than just surfing good." I think being a good American has more to do with working hard, being self sufficient, taking care of your family and property, and contributing to the welfare of the nation in whatever way you can. Dora a good American? I'm not so sure...
sounds like this ?MIKI Dora ...is the kind of guy that would steal your surfboard off the beach while your having a great session. I think we all know how that would eventually turn out, nowadays.
Listen y'all....well first of all there's almost a wave out there. If you were a hobgoblin it might be pretty fun. Some well-shaped 1 foot peaks out there. It's all clean and ****. A draining two footer here and there. I don't like when it teases you.....you're desparate and it looks almost flat and then boom a macking thigh high set comes rolling in....and makes you go, "hmmmmm" Then it's barely a foot and you're all, " Oh hell no.".........Then another macking set pushing over knee-high comes thundering in... OK, Miki Dora. Good Lord, I said he sustained his lifestyle by questionable means. However, did he lie, cheat or steal - was he more corrupt, more inheritantly evil than your average United States politician? Is commiting credit fraud worth traveling the world, surfing twitchen spots, and giving your finger to the mainstream world? Is two years in a cell worth a seven year world tour? Say what you will but it takes courage to buck the system. He also was intelligent and foresaw this world we live in today. He saw all the BS, long ago, not just in the surf world but every day life as well. It's not easy being a mad genius(just ask Erock) and saying things that are beyond the times. Plus, people being what they are, many were jealous of Da Cat's abilities, smarts, style and noteriety. So don't believe every negative story being passed around. Oral tradition can be a biased one.
I beleive it was tubesteak terry that handed out most of the ass kickings at malibu back in the day, not Dora
That's like a full time occupation for me in the summer... sitting on the beach staring at it for an hour, then all of a sudden... "hmmmm that one looked rideable." Paddle out... sit there... watch people watch me... paddle back in... watch for another hour.... "hmmmm...." and around and around and around...
I have lurked on this forum for a long time and this south jetty fraud finally made me post. southjetty, your post to start this entire thing was almost word for word from In Search of Captain Zero. That is fine and all if you use other people thoughts in your posts just don't pass them off as your own. Got it?
Well that took you long enough. Ok take out your Weisbecker prose and show how my post is "almost word for word" the same. Go ahead.....you brought it up. I'll wait........Hey this isn't Weisbecker himself is it ? Umm, Weisbecker isn't the only disaffected older dude out there you know. What was it the investment banker/corporate lawyer thing? Yeah, gee I wasn't thinking of Allan at that time so any similarities are purely coincidental. This had to do with Dora who saw all of these things years ahead, so if anything I was crediting HIM with the "idea" not plagerizing Allan Weisbecker's "original" thoughts of a declining surf culture. Dude, I never said I INVENTED these opinions.....I wasn't the first and I won't be the last.I like how I bring out all the dudes who join mesage boards just to be voyeurs. Hey speak out a little more, dude. It won't hurt you. Stay tuned Fungus(cool name dude), my next thread will be about my ex-girlfriend Liza who cheated on me and I solve a murder case and get threatened by a bunch of dudes in a central American country. You'll love it.....
Dude after you are done with my post above..........are you friggin serious. I just reread that first post. It in no way shape or form is "almost word for word" the same as Capitan Cero.........The only thing that is similiar is the Corporate lawyer/investment banker at Ditch Plains/Philadelphia Ave Sea Girt thing. AND the two reasons that scenario sprang to mind was, I wanted to make a North Jersey surf spot reference and because a few days prior to my posting, I watched a dude checking the surf in Ocean City, and he must have made three calls on his cell phone. I saw this on a surf cam.....he'd talk.....put it down......call someone else.....and he was dressed like he just got back from the country club. Is that ok, Fungus?
.....my apologies, you also took word for word everything ever written about Dora in The Surfers Journal. I would have mentioned this in my first post but I was busy firing one of my working class employees while drinking a $7 coffee. With that said Fungus is watching - you have been put on notice.
