BY FAR the best part of this whole thread is the reality that...I usually drive in from out of town, find a decent spot and surf...probably totally alone. Most winter days I find myself just WISHING that somebody else would show up to share the stoke in the "lineup". As for the VA Beach 1st St references, I lived down there for two years, why the heck surf there anyway. If you can get off work a lil early, it's ALWAYS worth the drive to Nags Head. I spent a few months surfing slop at the jetty before realizing that another 40 minutes on the road yields much better waves EVERY TIME. I just don't get the whole jetty deal. Even if it's half decent and you can't drive, North End is probably just as good (if not better). Just saying'...

Hold on. There is one major fallacy with the idea that "shore towns rely on tourists". For purposes of surfing....they absolutely do NOT rely on tourists. If PA/NY kooks decide NOT to visit the shore this summer, the ocean will not go anywhere. TRUST ME. Yes, our economies will diminish. Housing value will diminish. Infrastructures will diminish. But the ocean will remain resilient! You can count on that!
i usually surf there if I am limited on time. I get off work around 3-330 so I don't have much day light to play around with. also, I longboard so most of the time I sit out past the others and snag as much as I want. the north side hasn't had any good sand bars and camp pendleton works every now and again...just as much juice as 1st st.
