So, I'm in the market for a new board. I'm a fairly big guy at 6'0", 200lbs. I've been surfing for about 6 months. Here's where you're all going to jump on me and call me a kook and probably much worse: I currently have a BIC 8'4". I'm thinking I'd like to get something in the Fish family, probably a quad setup, for more maneuverability in small-medium New England surf. While I'd like to support a local shaper and go custom I just don't think it's within my means. So, what are some of the bigger guys riding?

hey man - I am 6'3 200-210, I used to have a 6'4" walden quad diamond tail it was fun in NE waves. Now I ride a 5'10" lost motivator, which is like a lost rocket but a bit beefier. Id suggest maybe 6'4"-6'8" fish for you though with 6 months experience.

Thanks, dude! The Motivator looks pretty sweet. I feel like I have good balance and I'm pretty powerful so I'd probably lean more toward the shorter side. 6'4" sounds about right. Thanks for the suggestion!

I've been checking out a few locals online. Levy Surf Designs out of Narragansett, RI looks pretty good. Thanks for the input!

Like the guys said check out some local shapers. Just make sure not to go to short you gonna want something that you can catch some waves on. Nothing worse then watching a beginner floundering around on some 5'4 potato chip. Its all about logging wave time. Also I would be careful if your going with the fishcuit, it has very little rocker. It will get you into wave great but I have seen my fair share of people pearling on that board

Just to chime in from a different perspective here -- I don't think you necessarily need to go with a shortboard to get more maneuverability. If you enjoy riding a longer board, there are plenty of ways that a shaper can make you a longer board that is more maneuverable. It's all about how you want to surf, what you want your board to be able to do, not to mention the type of breaks you normally surf.
