Competitive surfing is something I dreamed of doing ever since I was a little kid. This year, I finally am going to step up to the plate and go to a few local comps. I didn't last year because I was nervous about people not accepting/liking me..

I mean I'm only 19 and I know that a lot of people on this forum are a lot older and a lot wiser then me so I figured I'd ask for any kind of tips that you guys learned throughout your own years that you could pass on to me and other surfers on this forum in my position.

Thanks guys, it really means a lot.

paddle paddle paddle and more paddle. In a comp, you are basically sprint paddling for the whole heat. the biggest mistake most people make is to assume its like a free surf. you have to get out fast and get as many waves as you can (and working against your competitors to get those waves) so the ability to paddle long and fast is huge.

also make sure you know the contest structure and rules before entering. a good heat watch helps too.

If you're serious about competitive surfing join your local district in ESA , NSSA or both this will give you a taste of what it is like. The advice on getting in shape and paddling is right on. Contest surfing is a lot different than free surfing but the key is to have fun and enjoy the experience. PM me and I'll try and give you some more advice. Good luck

Thanks! I've signed up for my local district in the ESA. Last year I wanted to but I didn't have the confidence. This year I've been going to the gym to an extreme standard and really getting all prepared. I definitly want to get a good taste and then go from there.

Good luck don't let a couple bad results discourage you. Everything worth doing takes time to learn.

most heats in amateur comps like esa and nssa are 15minutes with top 2 waves scoring so i try to break up the heat into 5 minute parts and make sure to get 1 solid score in each part so that im not freaking out looking for a score near the end
