Honeymoon in San Juan, Puerto Rico

Go to Wannasurf.com and check out the beach breaks around San Juan. If you are staying in San Juan, just be advised that it is a 3 hour or more drive to Rincon and the breaks are reef breaks, some gentle, some not.
There's Aviones to the East of San Juan and Cochino to the West.

 

Don't know much about Guajataca. It's in Isabella. I lived in Rincon. About 2 hours from San Juan.

 

Stop 8 or la Ocho is about 2 miles from San Cristobol in Old San Juan. Easy going break until it gets over head high. You and your wife could almost walk there taking the high road down to the public park. Bring a mask there is a reef there offshore if its flat. Not a bad way to spend the morning while she sleeps in you surf, walk back, and order room service. Have fun.

 

Is the drive really that long to rincon? I was there a few weeks ago and it only felt like 1 hour or so? there was no traffic though.

Ocho is reef and aviones is reef, surfed both places on my honeymoon last march. Both are fun waves, there is a beach break in san juan next to a jetty its a left from what i can remember. I never surfed it it was a little small when i saw it and i was worn out. I stayed at the radison casino or something and that beach break was about half a mile east up the beach towards old san juan.there where some kids out surfing and it looked really fun.good luck and congrats man have fun its an amazing place. Watch out for sea urchants !!

 

Hey man you are talking about Condido resort area. And yes, that jetty is gnarley. Not a wave to be taken lightly. I body surfed it a few mornings and I cannot imagine having a surfboard in the mix. Every wave ends in a violent shallow water double up wipeout. haha you are better off on a reef. Really though, rent a log and go surf ocho.

If you can make it to rincon or isabella, GO. Especially Rincon, I'm still trying to figure out how to spend my winters there. There is so much variety in that area. For example, maria's could be knee high and log heaven while around the point it's head high and draining at pools and sandy's. That like a 5 minute drive!

Surfing reefs is good for you. It makes you surf smart. After getting comfortable with reefs you will feel invincible at a beachie.

 

La Ocho is your best bet

Hello, thought I would chime in here...mostly because I plan on getting married in PR and have been there so many times.

Basically, to enjoy the island you will need a car. There are many spots to surf in PR (I think over 80 on wannasurf) in all directions.

Stop 8 is your best best for multiple reasons:

• It's close to where you are staying
• Its longboard friendly
• It's an easy paddle
• There is a good vibe in the water
• There will be other non-locals
• It's easy to get food
• It doesn't have a lot of sea urchins
• There is an area where your wife can get in the water
• It has a cool backdrop

Surfing Stop 8 is easy, I just recommend going in the morning before the trade winds kick up (10am or so) and the water gets shallow over the reef at some points during your paddle out, so watch the fins. It's easy to navigate and it adds to the adventure.

If you go east (Aviones) you will find faster breaking tighter waves as well as most spots on the North coast going west until you reach certain spots in Isabella. This is kind of why there are so many spongers. I would recommend going west vs east. I have surfed most known spots and aviones is usually crowded. There is Luquillo, but it's not the nicest of areas. Route 187 is a nice drive to Aviones though.

If you go west, there are spots all over, but there are not many beach breaks that I know of, so you will have to get used to it. If you go all the way to Rincon, you will find world class waves, but more crowds, and it is 3hrs I would say. Not all the road signage is that great even looking at maps for some of the spots.

If you wanted to take a day trip west, I would recommend this:
Take a look at Stop 8 in the morning and if its 4' or more then go west. I personally like Los Tubos in Manati and think you should do that for a day. The beach there is a local hang out, but it's a nicer beach and there isn't a lot of riff-raff. Keep belongings and valuables to a minimum though. You can park on the side of the road and drag your board down the concrete boach launch. Get ready for a long easy paddle, but if it's breaking, it's a lot of fun. Lefts and rights and the wave has a good drive without getting dumpy or breaking up. Its usually a crumbling wave when it breaks which makes it easy to ride and when it's a little bigger, it's kinda rampy which is fun. I have only seen it tube a couple times in 20 years, but I haven't always been there on the big days. When you are done travel west on 686 and and follow a small sign up the hill and go visit Mar Chiquita. It's a unique beach and its all locals, but it's pretty.

Buy sunscreen, that sun feels hotter than in the states. Mosquito repellent to0 for at night. Puerto Rico is probably one of the most dynamic and amazing lovely islands in the Carribean. I plan on retiring there. There are zip lines, a rain forest, horse back riding on beaches, caves to explore, great food, super hospitable people, great nightlife, romanticism, beautiful breezy weather at night, great hand rolled cigars, and the best pina coladas I've ever had.

I like to eat at Barrachina in Old San Juan. You can catch cultural events downtown while you shop too.

Check out Old San Juan and Casino in Isla Verde. One of the most classy and amazing hotels I have ever been to. I just got back from Thailand and went to the famous Oriental and I think ESJ is nicer. Dress up and have an amazing time there. See and been seen.

DO NOT MISS OUT ON A BIOLUMINESCENCE TOUR. Will cost about $50-$75 a person for snorkeling and tour, but it's magical.

my good friend just came back from a week in PR with his fiance and he was stoked beyond belief. watch out though, his girl's beautiful and he was sayin that there were times where he was a little sketched because of 5 or 6 PRs lookin at his girl like tasty piece of meat. so if the wife is legit......keep you double guard up. and i'm just curious but how have you been surfing for 15 years....and still be a novice on a SuP??

 

might want to get those shoulders fixed before you bother spending all that money on a vacation wear it

 

I live and surf in texas, i have never even surfed over rock bottom. first time out was pretty sketchy , i wasnt to sure where to go out so i hung out and watched some people go out before i did. As i was paddling out went to duck dive and didnt even get my shoulders wet and punched the reef cut both hands up lol. Also the first wave is a little crazy as you drop the water is so clear it seems like the reef is a foot under the water. Just man up and go for it!! That place is just amazing, waves,food,people,atmosphere.
