Within my years of surfing, there is one thing that I have noticed. Surfers all share something in common, besides the sport we do, we share heart. Surfers have heart, we care for the enviorment, we care for eachother, we care... and we care a lot. I would like to inform you all about something else that you can choose to have heart in. And that is the Invisible Children (Kony 2012).. "The movement's purpose is to make Joseph Kony, a Ugandan war criminal, known to the world, for his successful arrest within the year 2012. Since 1987, Joseph Kony has abducted more than 30,000 children in Central Africa and forced them to be child soldiers in his Lord’s Resistance Army. Forcing them to kill their parents, destroy the lives of others, and become inhumane Learn more here: http://youtu.be/Y4MnpzG5Sqc?hd=1 Or here: www.invisiblechildren.com Watch the video, take 30 minutes to save 30,000 lives! To raise awareness, I plan to also "blanket" my town with these photos. I am not asking anyone to believe in this, or fight for it. I am just educating. Thank you for taking the time to read my post, -John
It's in the "All Discussions" section of the forum; not global surf talk or another surfing-only forum.
Although I am not dissuading you from supporting this cause, it is best to do your research before giving away your money...... http://tumblr.thedailywh.at/post/18909727859/on-kony-2012-i-honestly-wanted-to-stay-as-far This nonprofit is a little bit shady, and not all the money (of which you sign up to donate monthly) goes towards finding this guy, in fact only about 31% does. Thats not exactly fair to anyone in my opinion. But if you want to pay the heads of this organization $20 in order to donate $10 to finding this guy, thats up to you.
I have not give the organization any money actually, just been promoting the fact that these children are out there, and signing the petition. Which is exactly what I am doing by posting this. The printouts I used to put around my campus were just my own doing through a printer and google images.
No offense John, But this has been on Facebook for weeks. Frankly, I am tired of hearing about it. If we (as in the USA) spent the same amount of time on our own shyt...we would be ahead of the game. Instead, we act like the world police. Seriously though, do you expect people on here that can't even get along with neighboring states/counties to give a shyt about another country?
I couldn't agree more with that point! But I feel good knowing that I've shown people, who have had no idea about this topic, information about it. Sorry you had to see it again. Cheers.
This story has really gone viral today, and it's been interesting to note that pretty much every time I've seen it posted, someone is quick to s**t all over it. That tumblr article has been linked to as much as the actual video itself. Pretty much every charity you give to is going to have costs outside of their primary goal. You can see here a better idea of how IC actually stacks up compared to other charities: http://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=search.summary&orgid=12429 It's not nearly as bad as the critics make it out to be. Here's something else for further reading: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs...012/03/07/gIQA7B31wR_blog.html?wprss=blogpost
I am definitely sick of hearing about this ... and to sit and watch a 30 minute video ... Pass! Maybe if it was a two minute video I would check it out ... but 30 is a different story.
Yup, I guess so. I guess that these people were trying to reach out to one, if not the most, powerful country in the world to help out these kids. But your right, how silly of them. They have their own goverment, who can't even run a country to help them out. +1 Even though there are other places in the video participating.
Well, I think watching this half hour video is more worthwhile than most stuff we watch on the web or tv. I do like the idea of using advertisement towards more meaningful issues like mass murderers than say a $4.95 hoagie at wawa (just tryed the toasted meatball sub today...yum!) But there is definitely more to their issue than meets the eye....at least it gets our tired brains thinking differently....surf on Friday morning?????
I don't get why this is blowing up so much recently. This guys been in the news for years, they have been trying to catch him for a long ass time. Just because some video comes out that's actually got some good production now everyone is acting like its their top priority to find him. Sure he needs to be caught and dealt with but this video and raising awareness on the topic seems pretty pointless to me. Like one day were just gonna see him walking down the street and be like "hey that's the guy from that video, lets get him!"
x100 I have to laugh at the naivete of the american college student. feel free to give your money to a charity that uses very little of it for the actual topic they support. I'm sure they are laughing all the way to the bank. If you REALLY feel so strongly why not join the Ugandan Army and put your life where your mouth is?
IF any of you all care about the children in C. Africa, you should watch "Bouncing Cats." It's a documentary that focuses on the children of Uganda. It's also about break dancing. I highly recommend it. Some people lash out in opposition to things like this because it is easier than trying to relate to someone who speaks a different language than you, lives in a different culture, and had their hands, tongue and nose cut off when they were 8 years old because they couldn't hold an AK properly. BTW, I'm no "college student." And there are other ways you can help if you feel inclined that do not require money. It doesn't have anything to do with being world police, it has to do with being an advocate for children. Too bad Facebook (I'm not on it) beat the issue to death and dragged it through the street over the past week.
i wish to thank the brave freedom fighters of facebook and twitter for their tireless efforts NO PEACE NO JUSTICE!
