    Here's my advice...

If you're looking at this primarily because you have a true interest in fighting, and getting in shape for surfing is secondary, than pick your interest and go.

If you're looking at this primarily to get in shape for surfing, and secondary for an interest in fighting, I suggest picking a training method thats less likely to pop a knee, elbow, or shoulder and leave you out of the water.

agreed def go for Capoeira. you will get flexible, increase you stanima as well. Also, it is a great fighting style. (mainly kicks but some takedowns). I trained a few years and wish I had the time to get back into it. I know a awesome schools in Monmouth county. PM me for the details.

Hey man, I actually work at an MMA gym in Hamilton, NJ called Daddis Mixed Martial Arts. Probably about 45min to an hour from Monmouth county. I would def recommend taking up jiu jitsu and muay thai if your looking to get in shape. Def helps with balance, flexibility, and endurance as well. Its by far the best workout I've come across. Been doing it for two years now. Started working for the gym a little over a year ago. Got involved for the same reasons as you: wanted a good workout, and wanted to know how to defend myslef if I ever needed to. Now i'm addicted. If your interested check out phillymma.com and then direct message me and I can help you out.

Fighting? Yes! Martial Arts? Yes! Only the coolest people do that stuff. Chuck Norris, Elvis, Jackie Chan, Bob Barker, Danny Bonaducci, Glenn Danzig,Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Joe Rogan....MMA forget about it! I just act like Im an MMA fighter. I bought all kinds of affliction shirts 3 sizes to small, I use alot of gel, stuck my ears in a garbage disposal, and say the F word every three seconds. No one messes around with me in the line up!

gruvi you are wrong about losing as soon as you step into a fighting stance. I was in a situation once where, not even thinking, I kicked off my flip flops and widened my stance a bit. The argument shut down immediately when the guy realized that it was about to go down.

If you take MMA classes, im sorry, you are probably a d-bag. MMA in theory is great (a blend of disciplines). What MMA actually represents these days, thanks to UFC and tapout etc, is aggro meatheads. Guys who talk like they are from hawaii and have never been there. Guys who wear BJJ tee shirts around trying to look tough. Someone gave me a tee shirt at a karate conference once and the first thing that came to my mind is "great there goes the element of surprise". I just wear it cutting the grass. Now the neighbors know, I guess....

Try to "ground and pound" anyone who actually knows how to fight and you will be the only one on the ground.

here is a lesson for all of you, most people who go around starting fights are untrained and right handed. They do not realize that he skull is the hardest bone in the body and the easist way to hurt your own fists so they swing up top. SO there you go, he is probably swinging high, and from the right. The rest is easy, right? Now you can go surfing again.

I got into shotokan a couple of years. I definitely saw a difference in my surfing. The stretching and becoming more flexible really was the main help. Its a fun hobby. You get to kick and punch people twice a week and no one gets mad and the cops don't show up. Im not aggressive or violent person but there is something about getting punched that wakes up your instincts and makes you feel alive. It was great stress reliever. I would say that surfing and martial arts are a good match.
