So i have an idea, i don't know why i thought of this but thought it could be a cool thing to get this forum's brain neurons going a bit.

I was up late last night pondering as i often do about something to do. So i thought why not get the community involved with this? i want you guys to all come up with ideas on shapes, glass jobs, colors, and other design ideas. And i will try my best to incorporate as much as i can in a board, that is basically thought up by the people on this forum. Now keep in mind it can't be crazy. i am not about to make a 7 bump swallow with 19 fins and 1000 colors..... but i would like to get everyone here to at least vote on what would be a nice design and so on... what do you guys think? would you like to all participate in a collaborative design... hopefully everyone can play nice with something like this and if it doesn't work oh well... but i thought it could be a nice way to really show others that local shapers really put everything they have into doing this and we all love this industry... shapers, glassers, surfers... whatever it doesn't matter... its all about the joy of the ocean. so enough rambling and let me know what you think?

i always wondered what would happen if i had a board with a lot of nose rocker, and i took a small backward fin and put it under the nose. would that let me spin the board around with ease? like every time i put enough pressure in on the nose? this idea was inspired by me catching waves fins forward so i could do 360s on small days

I will be involved as long as I get the board... kidding.

hahah ok, so yes i am a shaper and glasser and instead of just showing work i figured hey lets get everyone in on some work. Im glad i got some positive feedback and like i said. lets try and not get to crazy, but as always innovation is always welcome!

757 finless could be a good option, but if it were finless i would like to make it a convertible. so maybe deep flutes to act as fins in between a standard setup?

Stay stoked, that could be a cool idea, maybe similar to double ender almost? the only problem would be control i would think, but once you got used to fins on both sides it could potentially work.

and Zippy i want this board to be ridden, so maybe i will make it a demo board?

Hmm, I like the double sided fin idea. Maybe something that is completely symmetrical on the nose and the tail. Has the wide point right in the middle and both sides taper into a squash tail with the same rocker and bottom contours. Kind of like a skateboard for the water, something short and wide for messing around on small days doing pop shuvits and little 180s and stuff. More like a trick oriented board.

I have no idea if that would actually work but it sounds fun to me!

+ 1...ever do a fin first take of on a longboard? Once those fins catch the board whips right around. def. with smaller fins or some type of different foil on the nose end to make it so you wouldn't need super extreme rocker (not normally found on shorter wider boards anyway) but make the board for more than just doing 180s.

Someone developed retractable fins. They never really caught on, or maybe never really worked that well. I don't have a link handy. Can't think of the name right now, but Matt Biolos knows him or worked with him or something. I think he posted about it on is blog.
When the fins are facing the right way they are down just like with any other board, but if they get turned around they would rotate up into the board. Then you have fins on both ends of the board, but only one set would be down or 'activated' at a time.

OK...... I like to cut the tail down with a double wing usually and as with most Ive seen the tail is always , including my own, a swallow. Why not a double wing baby squash quad with 4 channels running with the fins on the bottom????? Most swallows have a V or double running out of them so if you channel the squash that would do nicely for water out the back. Thats covers the tail and the bottom concave pretty much so everyone else can figure out the rest

if you are thinking of a double ender, i think round tail round nose, probably not symmetrical, but it could be.

If you guys like the idea of having a looser feel without losing all control you can move the fins closer to the center of the board, maybe a foot or two.

Someone else suggested double-ended fins. If you choose that route research into some wakeboard fin designs.

I've always wanted to shape a board that has sort of increasing tailward keel. But I always figured buoyancy/weighting and glassing would be an issue.

I say take a 10 ft blank and make a 4' 10 x 3 x 22. No tail rocker 2" nose rocker. 2 half moon fins with a tiny trailer fin placed slightly farther up then the 2 half moons. Performance rails, pin tail, longboard nose.

Although you called out the possiblity of anything really bizarre up front, I can't help but imagine the oddest frankenboard ever while reading these posts and I insist that it have a cup holder.

In all seriousness, the only thing I can think of that's incredibly out of the ordinary would be a SUP with a wavejet. I'm not sure that's surfing but it's different.

By the way, I gave you on honk while passing on Route 18 the other day. It was a supportive honk and not an angry one.
If that was indeed you... you looked perplexed :)

Hey Guys Sorry i have not been around, kind of busy the past few days.

So great ideas so far, Thanks for helping with this.

How about we say our shape will be the 4'10" simmons shape that mark said, I want to do this because tons of people out their want a simmons but just dont want to invest in the hope it will work. so i think this is a great idea.

wave rider said channels so maybe i could incorporate channels and have the twin fins glassed on in the channel.

Mon0cer Sup wavejet has been done before, and that would basically bankrupt me to invest in a project like that, and i get honked at a lot on 18 and since we live in jersey im always thinking what the F$%K did i do for you to honk at me hahaha so sorry if i looked perplexed maybe i should get a HONK for ARC sticker.

So let say that we stick with this small simmons shape with glass on half moons..... at least for now... what about glassing? crazy colors? inlays. what do you want? what tickles your pickle....

    Andrew,
I say you should incorporate sidecut like a snowboard. Especially if you are going the twin tip route. It's been done before with pretty good results (look up Steve O'Hara from Pioneers in NH, not to mention the Meyerhoffer stuff) but its something I think needs much more exploring and could be really interesting on a mini-simmons type board.

    See you soon,
    Jamie
