hey guys, im new to longboarding and need some advice on fin sizing. im gonna be riding an 8 and a half foot board. Im only about 110 pounds. I need advice on where to go. also anyone know about the turbo tunnel fins? thanks
turbo tunnel fins are actually really good for nose riding. work well as a 2+1 setup also. Larry "Probox" Allison makes them and they work well.
What ever fin you get at your weight you should keep it small......7 to 7.5"(with the turbo) for the center. That will help you alot better with your turning.
so what is it if not a longboard? your sayin its a funboard? and hell when your 5'5 105lbs porportionaly it is
I wasn't trying to bust your balls. If I remember correctly you mentioned you were interested in getting into competing. IF you plan on competing in the longboard division, the ESA (if I remember correctly) classifies a longboard as 9' and over. Also, back when I was your age and size I rode and competed on a 9' Mickey Munoz HPLB, which I still have (needs restoring). It's great if you already have the board and are using it to get your feet wet on something you are not used to riding. However, I think it will soon leave you wanting something longer. Even at your weight, the board may not be designed to ride on or close to the nose--you may end up sinking. But like I said, if you are just trying something new to have some fun--GO FOR IT! Shoot, I'll ride anything just to mix it up. I think you need a 7" slotted fin with a long rake and some good flex judging by your weight, and move it all the way up in the box. Personally I cannot stand stabilizer fins on a longboard and would avoid them at all costs
hahaha yea man no agro feelings i was literally asking if it was a funboard, thanks for the info. i just got this board to mix up my quiver that right now is all "hp" thrusters(6ft..6ft 2in..6ft 2in..6ft 4in) so this is realy gonna be a change..cant wait for even a little bump to be able to ride it.
Putting it into a board you've never ridden before, you really won't feel any difference between a tunnel fin and a normal fin. I put one in an 8'6 I had for a long time that I used to ride a cutaway in and the difference was that the tunnel felt stiffer and more stable... almost tracky in the tail... and possibly slightly faster. One session and I knew it wasn't for me.
Turbo Tunnel is very sensitive to angle of attack in the water, so unless it's perfectly aligned with the flow of water, it's going to drag. The shaper most-likely designed the board with a fin in mind. If you're getting a used board that's missing the original fin and can't find out what fin it came with, go with an 8" or 9" Greenough 4A. Just my 2 cents. Good luck
Yea thanks guys for the info I ended up getting a "normal" center fin(8in) then got the normal sized side bites. I was just curious shot those tunnel fins because I've always seen them on eBay but never in person so I was wondering if they were someones backyard project..lol
ya i totally agree- my friend had one in his 9'6 single fin and he swore by it until he tried another type of fin, then he totally got rid of the turbo tunnel. I personally always like a cutaway on a smaller 'longboard' or a normal fin on a regular sized longboard...
