I was just out with an elbow issue, I say use the time to make your surfing better. Look for better techniques, board designs, and normally I would say shape a board, but sounds like that might not really be an option. I researched paddling techniques that might reduce stress on my elbow. I figured it my keep me in the water longer if I am a little smarter. Good luck!

Took a softball to the eye on Saturday... Big, puffy, black and blue eye, with stitches. Will be out for a bit too.

I've been sidelined plenty before... If your into taking photos/videos of your friends, that is a fun way to be a part of a good swell.

Most important thing, is make sure you are completely healed before jumping back in again. The older you get, the more you realize you have to take care of your body as much as possible - which means being careful with injuries.

Yes I broke the outside bone in my hand several years ago. It was in a splint and went back out after about 3 weeks and rebroke it just paddling. Ouch. I was now out an additional 6 months and it was slow to reknit. Lesson learned: listen to you Doc and so much for macho.

yeah, broke my nose surfing, went out a week later, collided with a friend in the shore break and totally re-broke it. Worst pain I have ever experienced and the doc said that if I did it again that i would look like michael jackson because he would have to remove the bridge. After hearing that I stayed out of the water for the full 10 weeks. SUCKED.

when i broke my nose about 2 years ago i guess my doctor said he didnt care what i did before the surgery i had to fix it but after he said no collision sports for 6 weeks.

and now im recovering from knee surgery in december so 4 months ago and all i did to not concentrate on surfing was for the first 2 months not even check the reports. highly recommended, but now i check them daily and it kills me inside not to be able to surf even the crappy windswell.

broke my hand right before a trip to PR in college. Should have gotten it straightened and casted but didn't so I could go and surf. Very painful paddling, duck diving and pushing up. It healed and now my middle finger is crooked doesn't hurt though...

Broke my collar bone snowboarding in Jan 01. Took @ least 2+ months to heal. Was fooling around skating and broke it again. Grand total months without surfing = 8. Worst 8 months ever.

Dislocated my collarbone a few years back and was out of the water for about 4 or 5 weeks till it healed properly. I took photos and got myself into ridiculous shape by doing cardio and "modified" core training.
Unfortunately, I will now be out for the next 2 to 3 months, or more. Tore my rotator cuff and labrum (same shoulder), which I need to have surgery on.

eight weeks is about right. did the doctor discuss surgery as a option? not that surgery would make it a faster recovery but if the proper alignment of your collarbone is not restored it can affect you shoulder and therefore paddling mechanics. the surgical options for collarbone fixation have improved significantly in the recent past and allow surgeons to fix fractures that they otherwise would have let just heal on their own even if the alignment wasnt perfect. by no means am i pushing surgery but you should be aware of your options. if you would like i would be happy to look at your xrays and tell you what i think (i am an orthopedic surgeon and have fixed many broken collarbones). send me a private message with pictures of your xrays if you wish. also, surgery should be done within 2 wks and at the latest 3 of your injury, so keep that in mind. i can also try to find you a qualified shoulder specialist near you if you would like because not all docs are considering fixing collarbones.

at the least you should ask your doc about a device called a "bone stimulator." it is an ultrasound device that you place over the area of the fracture for a prescribed period of time and it theoretically helps accelerate the fracture healing. one manufacturer claims that collarbone fractures heal 40% faster with the use of the device. if you get one (u will need a script from your doc and insurance approval) ask for the one made by "smith and nephew." if your insurance wont approve, check eBay.

lastly, get enough calcium and if you smoke, stop. it will delay fracture healing.

    hope this helps.
