I'm going out to socal this summer and instead of bringing a board with me I"m planning on selling a couple and getting a new one out there. I've been riding mostly a 9'4" and a 9" and like the 9'4" better. I would be wary of anything seen on a mail-order type ad like that. You may end up with a Chinese-made POS. If you are going out there, there are shapers and shops galore. I would find a hole inthe wall shop that is basically a storefront for a shaper and take it from there. I have never been happier than with my Soul Performance, shaped by Mark Brog in Redondo Beach. My favorite board ever!
Yeah, man. For the love of god, buy your boards in person or from a shaper you've ordered from before. They may seem like great boards for less than 800 dollar boards, but penny pinching never turns out well when spending money for surfing. Hell, buy a Walden for that kind of money and you'll know you're getting a great board.
no matter where your going in socal from SB to the border there will be shops with used boards, lots of em.. dont spend a grand on something you wont be able to resell when you leave. Thalias in laguna beach, not exactly a surf destination.. and they sell way more trendy clothes that quality boards. If your heading to that area go down to san clemente, theres a shop on every corner and plenty of surf to back it up.. check out icons of surf if you go its worth the trip.
thanks for the reality check, icons of surf looks incredible I might see if they have something before i go. I'm staying with friends in laguna which isn't far from san clamente. i also just realized that United Airlines will not let me take a board over 9' so that is also a consideration. i might just take my 9' and pay the extra fees.
I have not heard anything about the regular boards, but I've been looking at them for a while Seems the shaper has a good rep. It'd be worth checking out while you're out there. If you're looking for a noserider/glider trim type board there are tons to choose from. Icons has about the biggest selection I've seen online and again if you're in the area might as well look.
