saw two people almost drown, what would you do

I remember about 5 or 6 years ago me and bunch of guys were out surfing till about 630ish when like 6 people got caught in a bad rip inbetween a jetty and almost like an island jetty and when we saw people screaming n **** for help we all paddled in and went to see what was wrong and then paddled out and brought them all back in to safety before the police rescue unit came, lets not talk about their response time lol. But i feel the biggest thing is that people don't know what to do when it hits them and they freak out which is the most common but worst idea ever. Regardless though people shouldnt try n go swim if there is a bad rip period, especially after hours like those retards were doing. But no matter how much you say it, people will never abide by that, they do what they want.

 

part of it isnt there fault nor does it matter how many times there warned because they don't under stand the whole rip current phenomenon and how dangerous it is and they cant recognize it when its there

 

ive think ive heard of something called the Good Samaritan Law or something like that. basically it protects you from those types of situations where ur helping in a life or death situation. an example would be if someone gets in a really bad car accident and ur driving by. naturally, u would stop and try to help them out to the best of ur abbilities. if u knocked there head tryin to pull them out of the car or failed at CPR or something, they couldnt sue u for trying to help

back to the question though, i would (and have) definitly swim over to save them. ive only had to do it once fortunately. it was 2 years ago at 52nd in OCMD where a little girl was playin at the waters edge in the shorebreak. of course her mother was talking to someone on the beach and not paying attention at all. i was sponging at the time (yes i do both lol) and saw her get hit by a wave and literally dragged into the water. she obviously couldnt swim cuz she never came up. i paddled like f****** crazy and got to where i saw her go under, reached down, and pulled her up by her leg. thank god i was there, cuz no one saw her go under; it happened in a split second. ive never seen a mother more embarassed.

 

I hate when I see little kids in the water and their parents aren't watching them - it makes me really nervous.

If you help someone at the scene of an incident, you are covered legally by the Good Samaritan Laws - it also covers if you start lifesaving procedures, etc. It also covers people like myself or lifeguards, police, EMS, MDs who have licenses, certificates, etc that need to be protected.

I helped someone in a rip as recently as last week, and I always go over to surfers that have tombstoned, or hit with their boards, bad wipeouts, etc. We are each other's keepers.

I agree with you to a certain extent, but the thing is that most people wont take the time of day to actually learn about it and listen to lifeguards and people who are trying to keep them safe. Another thing, is with little kids. I also hate when i see them up in the water and their parents being too far away from them. Kids are not expected to understand the whole concept when they are young, but its the parents job to be right there just in case and keep an eye out. And yes if it is that dangerous, don't let them go near the water without you holding onto them as long as you know what your doing.
