i dont even have my friends who surf so i mostly end up going out alone. in the summer however youre bound to be stuck with a bunch of people around here. most of whom you probably dont want out there with you...ive only got a year or two under my belt so i DO feel safer with other people around
i love surfing alone...helps empty out the head and just "live in the moment"...yeh cheesy. not a single one of my friends surf so im always padling out alone...but i say whats up to people here and there in the line up. even though it gets packed when there are waves...i still manage to block everyone out and just enjoy surfing. love the fact that this isnt a team sport...damn i sound anti-social as hell
fucckk I always surf alone. I just like being out there by myself with my thoughts. Surfing is the one time a day when I don't have to deal with people's bull****, so I prefer to surf alone.
Alone or with one or two others is OK. During the winter when it's getting dark, it's sometimes nice to have a few others out there with you ,
If a tree falls off his surfboard and gets eaten by a shark and no one is around to hear him scream, does he make a sound, yo?
i voted in this poll when it was first posted & never actually posted a comment, but since it's been revived, i feel now's the time. as a general rule, surfers suck. i never like sharing the line up w/ other surfers unless i know them. even then, it's only tolerable at best. i'll take an empy line-up any day of the week & actively seek them out as much as possible, happily surfing somewhat inferior waves rather than deal w/ other surfers.
I like to see a few heads in the water. Usually can't see what's under you here. Interesting to see this old thread and some of the old peeps.
Alone Alone is kinda rare depending.... in jerz I had some of my best session at IBSP solo, that place can be hollow in OC, no matter how early I woke up and paddled out (dark even), someone was there within 15 min, but thats still a few sets waves all for my greedy ass, totally worth it In HI I surfed a north shore break alone once, but the next peak down had a few people, so it wasn't fully alone, but no one was looking for the same set waves I was, so it was like I was alone. a perfect set up
Aint that the truth. When I was younger I used to love the competition and surf with others, my surfing was better because of it. Now a days I dont care for competing and I now surf soooo much better when im at it alone....less thinking gets in the way.
Alone or with a few friends. Screw a crowded peak. Always at least one (usually more) a-hole and I don't mix well with those people. And I'm the calm, patient one in my crew. If we all paddled out to a crowded peak I can almost guarantee you there will be a confrontation. One guy is laid back but once he gets riled he's like a raging bull. The other is much more confrontational. He's a good surfer and obeys the rules but drop in on him and he will run you over, punch you on the way down, and follow you all the way to the parking lot. I go to chill and have fun, not deal with that crap, so not even gonna go there.
"You’re always alone, anyway. That’s the test of a surfer. You shouldn’t have to depend on anybody." -Bear-
^^^^I like that quote...sums up the feeling I get when you are out with a couple buddies, a clean up set comes, and as you're scratching for the horizon you have that realization that ultimately, you really are alone out there.
Agreed, saw a guy drown at NSB and he was surfing in a crowd, when one of his students dragged him out of the water it was already too late
