I know exactly where you are talking about. I was surfing there last year in September with 2 buddies. One decides to go closer to the jetty where most of the lineup is. I always try an stay away from others so I headed a lil more north. Was catching some nice clean stomach/chest sets. Water was super clear but a bit overcast (ended up rainin a bit later). I was prarie doggin breakfast an had to paddle in to drop a deuce. When I got back my buddies were walking up the boardwalk carrying my board, the coolers and everything else with the most horrified look on their faces and white as ghosts. I thought the locals had gave them **** an was tryin to start a fight. Not the case. The one buddy that was surfing close to the jetty decided the break was better where I had been surfing so he paddled to that spot. He said within a few minutes of me leaving the water and him paddling over there that a huge school of baitfish had swam thru and a 6-7ft. black tip was feeding on them splashing around him so close that the tail of the shark slapped him on his leg. At first I didnt believe him,but Ill never forget that look on his face. We left and went to Satellite to surf and deal with a reef instead.

I'm sorry, but some people on here seem to be getting off on the scariness of a place. For me, being scared ****less takes all the fun out it, which is the whole point. A little adrenaline is cool, but scared?Hell no. Get a motorcycle and run down a highway at 180 if you like fear and risk of death. lmao The extreme wave riding subculture has chaned the true essence of what wave riding is all about. Having fun and getting stoked! And what's with all the talk in this thread of sharks north of obx? There's basically zero risk of an attack in this geographic location barring some kind of freak attack.....thankfully.

Totally depends on the spot. A solid overhead beach break is not equvalent to doh pipeline.

Ocean Beach, CA, was surfing over towards the jetty in 4 to 6 but let myself start to drift towards the pier. Huge set comes through and I get caught inside. I tried to ride the white wash laying down, but the wave reformed and I go over the falls. Disoriented, I can't find the bottom to push off, can't grab my leash to pull up. Finally make it to surface only to get pounded again, this time with half a breath. Didn't think I was comign up. Lets just say i had to go chill out on the beach for a bit until my balls washed back up on shore. Every once in a while, mother nature lets you know who really is in control! LOL

Solid 15 footers at wildwood during Irene. I was the only one out and the fog made nothing visible.

The Dump / The Cove - Washington St

For the most part this rock reef can be a good clean spot. On this particular day I was a newer surfer and an older more experienced surfer called and said we had 24ft at 21 seconds. Unreal conditions in a closed off cove protected from wind and cross swell. We got there and the indicator rock which is a mile or so out was looking like Mavericks. It was low tide and the shore pound was over head right onto the rock reef. I decided to hit it up even though the reef was exposed because I got the go ahead from the old dude. I had to run along the rock reef and push through the overhead close out shore pound to get out to the break. Because of the low tide the kelp was all over the top. I really should not have been out at that time but I was young and wanted some big wave experience and this was my chance.
The sets rolled in and I paddled into a double to triple overhead giant got spit right out the top and over the falls. I didn't hit reef so I tried it gain(a little more calm this time). The wave size and speed clearly out matched me and I was again shot out of the cannon. Getting pretty scared at the size of these sets and the fact that the kelp was everywhere and the reef was not to far below I decided to make my exit.

All the other times I surfed there were mellow. That was my day with the giants of the NW.

One morning last fall in lbi, it was just this friend and I. There was a SW swell and the waves were chest high... not too big. But the water was starting to get a little colder and there had recently been a shark spotting by the BL inlet... near where we were surfing. Every movement in the water freaked me out. That whole session I was trippin out.

At one of my breaks,I was inches away from being pushed into the opening of one of those huge runoff pipes.Low tide,Pretty decent size wave, with a wicked current. After I made it around the pipe my board was on the other side of the pipe.My leash got wrapped around the bottom of the pipe and started to pull me under. It was kind of a blur but I believe I took the leash off my ankle and pulled my board back to me.I'll never look at that pipe the same way.
