Stuff happens and sometimes it's nobody's fault, it's just comes with the territory IMO. I think how you handled it was fine, and if it were me i'd probably have a laugh with the guy afterwards and i'm sure we'd both be more aware of each other moving forward and it most likely wouldn't happen again.

after reading this thread I'm no longer wearing my hollister shirts and spiked hair. I'm pretty embarrassed to be a "surfer" right now

This whole thread can be summed up with rule #1 ...Treat others the way you want to be treated...that goes for surfing, and life. If you respect others, then you will be respected. If you drop in on people without a care, expect to get dropped in on or yelled at or knocked the F*ck out. There are always going to be instances like live4truth's scenario, accidents happen...it's just a part of life. I've been surfing for years and i literally can only think of a handful of incidents, and even those were just blown off.

Definition of a Surfer ----> the guy/girl having the most fun.

+1 koki....my response to the situation I noted above was silence. I paddled out past the guy toward the jetty we were surfing, and i didn't even look in his direction. To be very clear, he said nothing to me and frankly I didn't care if he did. He realized what he did without me evening saying a word (evidence by the amount of space he gave me--moved to another peak). After my session, i notiiced he parked next to me and we chatted in a friendly manner for a few minutes. Both us with smiles...glad to have opportunity to jump in before work.

Overall, In most situations your surfing does the talking in a line-up...and when it doesn't a conversation is always way more effective than an attitude, threats of violence, or actual violence.

Kyle glad to see your So level headed...and I appreciate your perspective and responses. Hope there are more people like you in the water of the next few months.

Lol get off the internet while your at it. It didn't exist till the 90s. The internet makes for pussification of all who use it with your fat fingers and blood shot eyes. Gerry Lopez used to use carrier pigeons to send messages from HI to the main land. Fooking kooks these days.

He also used to scribble his text on stone tablets with his fingernails. Growl. he was a true waterman that guy....TRUE waterman. surfing as a sport with athleats who are in shape? OMG the insanity of people. I hope my kids sit inside all day on the internets and play xbox with cheezdoodles and soda candycains and poop fingers.

If you're so hardcore, why would you want to fight someone to settle a dispute in the lineup. It seems to me like the person who's more "hardcore" would be the one who's more exhausted from surfing full-on all day . . .

I don't know about you but I'm in no condition to fight after I've been in the water all day.

Just leave it alone. It's not worth confronting anybody about. If someone snakes you or drops in, kindly and calmly tell them in a FRIENDLY way that it's against etiquette to do so and that following an etiquette makes surfing safer and more fun for everyone. 9/10 times they're beginners and don't know any better. If you get pissed off about it, you're the a-hole. If you love surfing so much and are a halfway decent person you would want anybody who could gain the pleasure you gain from it to gain that pleasure too. If you just want to be a selfish clown, the water's not the place for it—that attitude gets people killed.

If someone keeps being a jerk, either ignore it or move to another peak. Is it really worth ruining your session with a confrontation?

And if you keep showcasing your machismo in such insipid ways as trying to enforce your will in the lineup with your fists you're gonna have a bad day if you try to beat on someone like me, who carries a knife into the ocean every time he surfs. Just leave innocent people alone and treat all people with respect and decency and you'll be better off. I promise.

I'm normally a big fan lee. But your dead wrong. I don't care how good you are. A 10ft log flying 50mph towards the beach is a hazard for everyone. If your good enough that you never wipe out great... Till then wear a leash.

So, should we just let road-raging drivers settle things for themselves too? Get real . . .

George Zimmerman got in trouble because he chased down a black kid after muttering racial slurs on the telephone and shooting the kid when the dude made a stand.

Most self-defense shootings don't even go to trial because they're obvious cases of it. Zimmerman was a racist who disobeyed the 911 dipatcher to go gun down a boy who just went to buy Skittles . . .

Sorry, bro. It's a very legitimate self-defense case that any jury would buy that if someone tries to beat on me in the water, I feared for my life. Size differences, etc. matter less in that situation and people can EASILY drown when fights happen in the water.

It wouldn't be my first choice. I'd hate to ever have to seriously injure or kill someone, and it would probably torment me for life. It's not like I carry a knife to defend against unruly jerks in the water, either. But if I'm in the ****ing surf and someone's trying to box me unconscious, that's a situation of him or me as far as I'm concerned, and most juries would agree with me if I have any damned lawyer worth his salt.

If he punches me and I get knocked out, I can drown. Fear of serious bodily harm or death is pretty easy to establish.

Who owns this mythical 50 mph longboard?

I agree though, people should wear leashes. It's for everyone's safety.

Listen old bitter dude or young punk. Your in serious need of an attitude adjustment! Ok KELLY, you don't own ****! Your not entitled to ****! Don't get all steamed cuz some big hairy guy from Philly sitting on a funboard on the inside mess up your weak try at that air reverse you can't seam to land! Thats why you should wear your leash to fool. Remember you were that kook once. Guess what, you still are. High school hero, real world zero.

I didn't know Al Sharpton posted here. You seem to have dismissed the facts completely and invented a few!

George Zimmerman was walking back to his car when "the all out nigga" as he called himself on twitter (who wanted to: "kill em all") attacked him and was on top of him beating him and Zimmerman, fearing for his life, shot him at a distance of 6-18 inches. Zimmerman's face was bruised, nose broken, head lacerated and Martin had bruised knuckles.

Travon's father didn't live in that complex, which was plagued by crime, his father's girlfriend lived there. Trayvon was there because he'd been suspended from school for two weeks for repeated offenses including posession of burglary tools, assaulting a busdriver and drug possession- drugs which were still in his system.

All the evidence supports this version of the events and Zimmerman has no history of racism or bigotry- quite the opposite actually: his best friend in the neighborhood who witnessed the end of the altercation is black and Zimm had been very vocal at a town meeting regarding an incident in which the PD had covered up the bating of a black youth by a white officers son.

The "racist mutterings" have been completely debunked. The race baiters in this country pressured the DA to trump up the charge and bring this ridiculous case to trial.

It's Tawana Brawley/Duke Lacrosse all over again and something needs to be done to hold the race baiters that are inciting riots to justice.
