If you've got some free time at lunch and wanna see something hilarious check out the croatan/pendelton cam. SUP'er has just taken out 3 shortboarders and they're still dropping in on him. Better than a soap opera. Can't really figure out what anybody is doing in the water, anyway.

VA Beach? I heard that people "dump" in the water there like it's their job. Dirty South.

Haha, one time on that cam, I've seen a bunch of people with foamies trying to catch a wave and about 6 of them all tried to catch the same wave. It seemed like their first intention was to let go of the board when they got on the wave. It was hilarious to watch because after a wave you would see a confetti of foam surfboards launching into the air haha.

They run that surf school right there @ croatan so that might have something to do with it. VB would be a lot cooler if some people just chilled out and had some common sense and courtesy. I guess thats true of the whole damn planet.

Well the sad truth of this situation is VB likes to advertise the **** out of having ECSC here and I've seen commercials when on vacation advertising VB as a place to come learn to surf. In reality, there are so many laws in the summer restricting where and when you can surf it's not even funny. Claiming to "protect" swimmers while seriously endangering many surfers. O yeah, and the military ****ed us and owns a rather large strip of beach that only military I.D holders can get on. For being a huge surf town and one of the first places surfing took off on the East Coast, **** sucks.

virginia beach is the taint of east coast surfing. 'taint that good, could be worse though. I personally love that most vb surfers go the same spots, it helps me avoid them.

I was tooling around in some shoredump saturday on a friends bodyboard while waiting for the tide to drop. 7th st. area. Red flag conditions so surfboards are allowed in the water if the beach patrol will allow them. As the tide drops a few set waves start breaking in about neck deep water. I paddle out (15-20yds.) for a few of the bigger ones and start to hear the whistles blowing.

Along comes a lifeguard an he tells me I can't be out there without fins. I knew what he meant but thought I'd play a little so I said that if I had fins on my b'board then it would be considered an illegal surfboard and I'd be breaking the law. He points to his swim fins. I don't own any so I asked if he really was telling me my only option was to grab my surfboard and catch the same shorebreak that has tourons bobbing all over the place. He says I guess so.

So much for using a little logic. I saved more than a few people in VB waters while surfing over the years. Often way before the guards can get to the water. Next time maybe I'll say "sorry, I don't have fins and a little red float so I can't act as an official lifeguard and save your a55. Hope you can tread water." [not really but he pissed me off]

Richmond (VA) was the capital of the Confederacy during the Civil War. I'm pretty sure that qualifies Virginia as a southern state.

    Thanks for saying that haha.

Regarding the comments about the bases in VA Beach (and the rest of VA for that matter), there is a reason for all of that. Say what you will about which state carried the Confederacy, it was VA. The federal government obviously noticed this, in addition to proximity of VA to the U.S. capital. Therefore, after the Civil War, VA (aka Military District 5 if my memory serves me correct) was inundated with federal garrisons. Many were built during the war (siege of Richmond for instance), others expanded (Norfolk/Hampton Roads) and the mark remains to this day. This was to teach the leading state of the Confederacy a lesson in addition to preventing such an event from happening again.

That's at least a reason for the military presence in VA and its oceanfront. Perhaps if VA had been a Yankee state, Pendleton for instance, may not exist.
