Going to be in the Boston area for a week in September hoping to sneak away for some nortg east surf while I'm there. Any suggestions on a mellow spots that might be breaking around then? If no surf, I would like to visit some of the surf shops and towns, any ideas? Going to be staying around ipswitch once we are out of the city if that helps.
Don'tknow the area... Just head to the ocean... If there's waves, it will be breaking somewhere and you will find it... Nobody is going to tell you where to go and they will most likely rip you for asking
If your in Ipswich check in Gloucester for Good Harbor Beach or Long Beach. Those arent exactly secret spots and best chance for surf if there is any swell
Gloucester is close to Ipswitch and a good place to check. If you have a car head up to NH and go to the Wall. There is a sur Shop Cinnamon Rainbows right at the north end which is a decent spot. The Wall is not the best spot but its hugs and if its low to mid tide you will have rideable waves. If you luck out and there is a hurricane brewing you will see large surf. Good luck on the paddle out. If you want to go a bit farther north head to Long Sands or Short sands beach in York Maine You gotta love the NYNJ super aggressive mentality. People up here are pretty cool about surfing and are more than willing to help a visitor find a place to surf. Maybe they will not give out their super secret spot but they will definitely give a handful of options without hesitation.
South of Boston is Nantasket Beach in Hull. Definitely not a secret, but you need to check a surf report because it's not always breaking. Luminate Surf Shop just opened a store there.

Its a forum who gives a ****. Asked a question because I was interested in what people had to say. You are apparently a tough guy and need to let me know what other tough guys think about asking questions. Appreciate all the input sounds like ill check out Gloucester. Not even sure ill go surf but checking out breaks is always fun. I'd rather go check out abunch of coastal communities than be stuck in a city my whole time. Any must do's in the area that might get me off the beaten path?
If you have the time, drive north for an hour and check out Ogunquit, ME. Wide open, really mellow, beautiful, and a fun wave if there's a swell.

Deff worth a look at Nantasket if there are waves at all. Its a fun beach with enough room to spread out, and no one will hassle you here, its no secret spot. Luminate is awesome they have another shop in Marshfield, MA and the owner is an awesome dude, super friendly.
Hey man, I lived up there in Beverly MA for a short time and I'll tell you it's a good area to be in when there's anything of significance going on in the atlantic. Check out some google earth.. there are so many little nooks and crannies in that coast line north of boston. I'm not gonna blow up any spots on here of course, but if there's swell, you'll have great times searching around... it's the kind of place where you feel like you could discover some mystic reef or point around some corner in the most unexpected places. When I lived there I mostly saw places that looked like they had tons of potential, but would take very specific conditions to turn on.. lots of spots are very tide dependent also.. but if you're there and you get lucky you might score some pretty amazing surf at spots that don't resemble anywhere else on the east coast.
