I think it would depend on who you clasify as a surfer. If you went by board owners only or people who surf here and there and tell their relatives, college friends and potential girlfriends that they are a surfer the density would be much higher than it would be for who I would consider a real surfer. There are so many people who show up for a season, are all excited and paddle out every swell in the summer and then just fade away. Lots of women taking lessons nowadays and I bet all of them tell people they are surfers but I would bet less than 1 percent are actually surfing on a regular basis a couple of years later. Until you can clarify what changes a normal person to a bonafide surfer it would be hard to compare. Based on general population density only NJ has 10 times the density of surfers as NC.
psh...NJ is way higher. I went down to nagshead awhile back for some clean chest to shoulder high waves and i couldnt find more than a 4-5 person crowd. there's endless sandbars
