took a fin to the hand this weekend and ended up with some stitches in my hand. anyone know of anything i can use to keep my hand dry while surfing. giving it until this coming friday before getting back in the water. i tried some plastic wrap and then a rubber glove over top and then a plastic bag over top of that and everything duck taped multiple times, and within a couple of minutes everything was saturated. so im looking for anything that may have worked for other people

Just cut it off, stick it in the freezer, and sew that puppy back on when you're done. "60% of the time, it works every time."

a tight fitting exam glove should work assuming you don't have a latex allergy.

I had the same issue when Hurricane Bill rolled through a few years ago. I used one of the thick green latex gloves, duct taped the end with just a bit of the sticky part on my wrist, then put one of my winter gloves over it. Worked fine. At the time I also had 6 stitches in my chin so I just did my best at keeping my head dry. Hope this helps.

I actually prefer to approach a break with an open wound. Nothing discourages a crowd like my DNA and the thought of a shark attack.

liquid bandage is your best best. it should seal the wound and if needed you can cut through it to take the stiches out later...

How about just staying out of the water until the dr. says its o.k., nothing is better than the pain of ripped out stiches and the ensuing infection that you may receive...its only 7 to 10 days...goofball...@lee...thats funny sh!t

3m Tegaderm is a thin clear bandage like cover that goes over stitches and so forth for showers and what have you. Ask for similar products at your local pharmacy. Best thing to use to cover stitches or wounds in the water.

stay out of the water. skin is your first defense against infection if it's compromised you're "F'd". + didn't you hear about that guy in South Carolina that got "flesh eating bacteria" at the beach. That MRSA stuff ain't no fun bro. Oh yeah and when the beach is contaminated by sewage, it's gotta be contaminated before they can know to tell you. In LA we are warned to not surf for 3 days after rain... surf vs get an infection.

Yeah I would stay out of the water for a while. Waterlogged compromised flesh will breed nasty stuff. If you do go in ; Dry the wound out after really well. Remove and bandages and leave open to air. Then antibacterial ointment.

    stitches - no prob.

The day of the Belmar Pro I was surfing down in Spring lake and my board hit me right in the face when I was under in the backwash. Right on the bone under my eye -- I took 29 stitches to sew it up. two hours later I was back in the water, I covered it with several layers of "liquid bandage." Sometimes called Newskin . . . it's basically a watered down cyanoacrilate, it hold things together and keeps water out. I was fine. The problem with your hand is that you keep flexing it, I guess. I had no problems surfing and the scar healed up great.

I too agree with using a Liquid Bandage. For extra precaution use a latex glove or 2 taped up.
    BUT...............
You are going to be more susceptible to re-injuring your hand, and this will slow the healing time WAY down. The choice is yours, but I'd stay out of the water for awhile if you want it to heal as fast as possible. Re-injuring your hand will just prolong the healing process. Sucks to hear, I know, but it's worth the temporary time-out.
