I have yet to ever see a Go-Pro video that was not from the perspective of looking at the person surfing. Real original, plus nobody wants to stare at your kook face while the frame is all shaky and crappy from you chop hops. Why is it that anyone who owns a go pro and that is like more than half to @ssbags in the water these days have to have it on the nose of their board looking at them. That perspective sucks! Get over yourselves.
If you are going to use it for your own improvement i.e. see what your doing wrong or where you can improve, thats great good for you. But if you are going to make, edit and post it to share on the internet change up the perspective you selfish attention whores.

if you are good enough, you don't need to video yourself, somebody else will do it for you.

I use mine for two reasons.. 1. self improvement and 2. I enjoy reliving the session sometimes.
I don't take it all the time but would be more likely to bring it with me if the surf is particularly good. The vids are for my use and not for editing and making surf vids.

Im the same way. I got the gopro about 5 years ago now and at first i was siked to see all the waves and put together some clips. I quickly realized the front angle makes for terrible surfing footage. There is nothing like going out for an epic barrel session with the gopro, coming back home and watching all the waves you caught on camera, bad quality or not. Over the years i have found i use it much more for things other than surfing. The cameras are great, reliable and practically indestructible. As someone said above, if you dont like it dont watch it.

i agree watching those gopro vids are lame. i recently got a gopro but i have only used it with the wrist mount, never wanted to stick the other mount on my board because that angle is crap. however i been kinda stoked from my wrists point of view.

    Why all NJSur4 posts suck

I have yet to ever see a NJSur4 post that was not from the perspective of looking at the person posting. Real original, plus nobody wants to hear your kook comments while the website is all shaky and crappy from your posts. Why is it that anyone who owns a profile and that is like more than half to @ssbags on the internet these days have to have it on the front of the site looking at everyone. That perspective sucks! Get over yourselves.

Interesting...I don't watch them, but I don't own one either. If I owned one I would probably get into them more.

im not sure how a go pro could be used as a training aid tho. mounted to the nose it would be hard to see things like foot placement, weight distribution and head/shoulder motion. if i want to do video analysis, i would have someone film from the beach.

Yeah, I'm in 100 percent agreeance on this. It would be better footage to turn the camera around and see the wave, not the person. But hey in this society everybody wants to be a superstar and get their face out there. Not me, I'm too ugly....

I also agree with "dont watch" solution. I've tried to watch the footage but it is absolutly terrible. Besides, wouldn't it be better to improve your surfing by seeing what line you took or should have taken? I just don't understand how the camera pointing directly at you is going to help. I thought maybe for position on the board but you cant even see half the person. I dunno, let me know the error of my ways.

There is also a learning curve to the whole thing. Anybody can get one of these go pros so the moment that they get their first footage they edit the 2 hours worth of video and realize that there is only a minute worth of surfing, and it sucks. Getting good footage takes hours and hours, and sometimes you only get a few good clips. It's also a learning curve figuring out how to mount it. I started with it on the front of the board, which I think I got some good shots with, then tried holding it in my mouth and having it tethered to me. I'm going to try the chest mount also. Finally, you got to have more than surfing in the video, time lapses, cool transitions, random **** is interesting. I just do it for fun and to share it with friends. And as others have said, no one is forcing you to watch them. usually by the first 10 seconds you can tell if it's a turd.

Exactly. go pro videos suck for exactly the same reason his post sucked. The perspective is all wrong. Thanks for making his point more clearly than he did.

Many of the threads on this site are very philosophical. Just keep in mind there is no wrong answer, long as no one is hurt. If you're having a bad day/week/month/year, this site should be something to make you happy. I do appreciate the healthy discussion, but let's chill on the name calling boys and girls.

Personally, I have not used a GoPro, but appreciate those who try it. That's how we learn. Maybe the front of every surfboard is not the place, but occasionally there is a decent loop. I like surf films in general, but often get frustrated watching them because I'd rather be the one surfing. But we also learn how to push the envelope from films as well, so it's a double-edged sword. Just keep in mind that, if you can log water time in any fashion, you may be more fortunate than some others who are landlocked.

    haha

    Lol.

Yeah I am a surf filmmaker and I don't touch go pro. It might be useful if attached to a rod and used while sitting in the water, but attached to a board it looks bad. But if held on a rod while surfing it might make a good angle. If you watch Allen Wilson surf films from Ireland on vimeo he uses a very expensive camera on a rod while surfing massive and heavy waves.
