Here's 2 checks that my doctor had me do:

    1. Hold your hand out with your fingers splayed out. Follow the tendon from the base of your thumb to the wrist, it should be prominent. Beside that is a little indent, called the "snuff box" in between the 2 tendons from your thumb. Press a finger in that. Hard. If there is a pain, that might mean broken scaphoid. For comparison, do the one on your non-injured hand.

    2. Hold your hands out in front of you, palms together make a point. Bring them to your chest like you are praying. How far can you go? Your hands should be 90 degrees to your wrists.

It's a personal call, but what sold me on going to the dr. was that if you wait and it gets worse you are going to be sidelined for longer than if you would have went now. Think about that, 8 weeks now versus many months later.

I was told that the blood flow to the scaphoid is very poor, basically a vessel empties on top of it and it trickles around it, so healing is very slow. And it only truly heals if it is imobilized, so if you get a brace, I'd wear it all the time. But seriously, see a doctor.

So I ended up going to Walgreens and picked up a brace / splint wrap made by Ace, after I went to Sports Authority and picked up the wrist braces for skating (will probably return them). It has a splint on the top (most importantly) and the splint on the bottom doesn't bow out nearly as much as the one on the skate version and it's also covered by fabric unlike the hard plastic on the other. I've been wearing it since I got it and it feels good, so i'm gonna give it a shot tonight after work. I tried doing pushups in the store before I bought it and no pain so hopefully it stays on in the water with no issues.

So I tested out the wrist brace last night and it worked perfectly. I mean it was definitely an added challenge with the limited movement and not being able grasp the board well with my right hand but it served it's purpose in that I was able to pop up without further injury or pain to my wrist. The wrap still looks brand new after being the water and there was no damage to the deck of my board, so it worked out.
