I caught the sunrise from my surfboard this morning for the first time! It's one of those things that I've planned to do half a hundred times but I always seem to make excuses until the sun is already high in the sky. Nevertheless, it was absolutely beautiful! Woke up at 5 and was in the water by 5:30. There were knee to thigh high rollers coming in, a slight offshore breeze, bait fish jumping all around me, and the sun turned the sky orange as it started to rise. Oh, plus I had the entire beach to myself. There's nothing else like it! Definitely way better than sitting at work all day watching an ESE wind come up and spoil the waves! This might be a new ritual for me...

    Who else can relate?!

I try to get at least one dawn patrol a week. I prefer surfing early in the morning.

Dawn Patrol, best surf you'll ever have by far, hence my screen name, can't find a better way catch a wave and enjoy the surrounds of the beautiful ocean, and like you said, it's typically all by yourself or maybe with a small handful, but it's peaceful nonetheless

It's freaky though, the first time I did it, there seemed to be schools of fish popping up all around me. Then I realized they were being chased by a larger fish. Then I thought, wait, what if there's an even larger fish down there. Then I realized I wasn't the top of the food chain out there. Still, it is awesome.

i did this about 2-3 weeks ago dark when i got out. had the beach to my self for an hour watched the sunrise, dolphin swimming within 10 feet of me, and waist high peelers. nothing better in my opinion except maybe sunset surfing.

the fish freak you out at first, as long as you dont see major splashing youre good lol. it is a great scene though...nothing like seeing the sun rise. luckily i work the midnight shift so i see the sunrise everyday..definetly a benefit of working hours others dont like to work.

Had a DP sesh a couple weeks ago when I was on vacation. Just me and every carpenter on the island. Still... there's something about it you just can't put into words.

Winds are always a little calmer and waves a little cleaner. I like it in the summer to avoid the heat and crowds.

Dawn Patrols make us who we are. Love going to work afterwards all chill while all the non-surfers look all stressed and haggard...

^^^ This, it's funny because just recently my "boss" has been telling me how much better my attitude has been lately, and I believe it is directly related to the amount of surfing i've been doing.

What's not to like.. Beautiful Sunrise, less crowds, & the friendly regulars. Was able to get in 2 or 3 DP's a week this summer.. It was also good having less people, since being I'm a beginner it meant, I could easily keep out of the way and make sure others were not in my way.

My morning DP routine: Coffee, Banana, Stretch, Head to the Beach (25 minute Drive). Like others have said, what a great way to start the day and get a sesh in before work. Totally refreshing! Total Blessing!

Dawn patrol is the ultimate way to start a day. Love taking naps after too. Love those sunset sessions too.

First off, dawn patrol changes lives.

Sunset sessions are definitely crucial too. Last week, I had a great sunset session with a neighbor, from South Africa. We traded surf stories and discussed his African shark encounters; despite the growing darkness and eerie water. It was so dark, that we even had trouble finding our beach access. Regardess, it was a great surfing experience and I will be surfing dark water soon.

Really is the best. WAAAY better than sunset (which is awesome).
If there's a good wave, it's even better than that other really great way to start your day....

Done. I'm getting up at 515 tomorrow.

Nothing beats an early morning session, it always gets me through a full day of school/work.

Agreed and agreed. Tough to hit DP when you live 25 minutes away from the beach. A few years ago I moved to the beach and DP is a regular ritual. The only way to make it better is to get laid first, then go catch DP.

Don't you guys like the after work evening glass?
i like surfing at dawn but hate leaving good waves to go to work. i like dawn patrol when i have a day off but will surf untill it blows out or the tide gets it.

the after work session when it glasses off and you can surf untill dark is my favorite. washes all the crap i had to deal with all day right off.
