Anyone ever been to the Santa Teresa area in Costa Rica in November? Thinking about going around Thanksgiving and was wondering how the waves were and if anyone knew of any good places to stay.
Santa Teresa is a unquie experience with plenty of surf. You should definatley consider going. There are alot of expats from the east coast too. We stayed at hotel Raratonga http://www.santateresabeachotel.com/ and I have no complaints it was perfect.
Hey man don't commit yourself to one area. The country of CR is HUGE and has hundreds of miles of coastline. Santa Teresa is nice but it is also a major pain in the a55 to get to. Closest airport is at least 5 hours away. Even once there I think surrounding towns like Montezuma (MonteFUMA cough cough) WAY cooler town an hour or so north and Mal peis (better surf) right around the point are cooler costa rican experiences, IMHO. We came through Santa T on a road trip with my old man once and he said that the town reminded him of Vietnam. That part of the country is... the country. Unpaved roads through the mountains. Sketchy bridge crossings. Little to no law enforcement. Pura Vida.
Santa Teresa is almost always ridable and picks up most swell directions, it can actually get very big at the beachbreaks and closeout.....then it's time to search around the area because there are numerous reefs/points that are worth exploring. There is a small airport near Santa Teresa in Tambor, about 30 minutes away.
I was there Nov of 2010. It was good every day for nine days straight. I stayed at Casa Marbella which is kind of expensive for a surf trip but killer.
I have to agree with Lee. Your best bet is to fly into Liberia and make your way down to Santa Teresa/Mal Pais hitting a bunch of spots on the way...Playa Negra, Nosara, Camaronal, Playa San Miguel.....as you go south, you will see the "old Costa Rica"....not too developed but great. Stop at the Flying Scorpion and ask for Rossi in San Miguel...great dude.
In 01 I camped at Playa Carmen for 3 weeks until the cops came and ran us off. The place is outstanding. It gets really big at times. It's a lava bottom covered in a thin layer of sand. There's some channels but that won't help when the giant sneeker sets come. I've been as far south as Pavones but could never get further north than MalPais. There a bunch of secret spots, but have probably been developed since I've been there in 05. I found a sweet break at Playa Bongo right in front of the cemetery. Was later told there's tons of sharks. I was given a house down the street from Frank's, and was offered to have a technical school built for me to teach the kids a trade other than theft and drug sales.
Santa Teresa is amazing, and there are also other excellent spots within a taxi ride. Check out my daily video surf report, it will show you the waves from Santa Teresa. Friends, how about Oahu, Hawaii, Honolulu? Thinking? Ok. I'm gonna tell about a nice island. Exactly, a perfect place for the surfers! What a scenery lies here! Surely, I can say loudly that it's a calm and peaceful place! So get ready for being here!!
