Anything But Pop-Outs Saturday Sept 29, 2012 8am – 2pm Ortley Beach, NJ Formerly known as the “Anything But Three East”, we have re-named the event to align more with the focus of the event. Meet professional and hobby surfboard shapers on the beach in Ortley and demo their surfboards right there in the surf. And it's FREE!!! For those who haven’t heard of the AB3, it was originally started in San Diego as an event to bring awareness to alternative board design, twins, quads, bonzers, etc, anything but the standard shortboard thruster. Surfboard manufacturers would show up at the beach with a bunch of boards and let potential customers demo a few out in the surf. Over the years, the event has morphed into an outlet to champion the art of handcrafted locally made surfboards by both professional and amateur shapers. It became a hot-rod show for surfboards that was free for all to attend where everything from resin tinted and polished logs to asymmetrical fish to backyard shaped boards were shown off and tested out in the surf. The only requirement to attend was to keep the vibe low key. No banners and no sales were allowed on the beach. It was a gathering of craftsman and aficionados spreading the stoke of handcrafted boards. The first Anything But Three East was held in Harvey Cedars, NJ in 2008. It was a huge success with hundreds in attendance. Since then we have decided to change the name to the “Anything But Pop-Outs” to keep the focus on finely made handcrafted surfboards of all kinds, as long as they are handmade by surfer labor. This will be a gathering of local surfboard manufacturers and craftsmen, where pro shapers, backyard builders, and board riders meet up and talk about surfboard design and construction. If you a pro-shaper, bring some demo boards to reach potential new customers, if you are a hobby shaper show off your skills and talk about construction with a pro, if you are a surfer come out to try new boards and meet some shapers. What’s a Pop-Out? It was a term assigned to boards that were popped out of a mould that has since been adapted to all boards mass produced overseas by non-surfers. Nowadays, some of these boards look similar to handmade boards to the untrained eye and sit in the racks at your local surf shop with prices well below a boards made by surfer labor. The goal of the ABP is to teach the benefits of working with a local shaper, show off beautifully handcrafted surfboards, and let surfers demo boards right there at the event! The ABP is sponsored by Greenlight Surf Supply who will generously donate prizes to be awarded for several categories including, Most Innovative Design, Best Resin Tint, Best Art Work, Best Backyard Board, etc… Big news! We have partnered with the NJ Surf Show to hold the event on the beach in Ortley, NJ near the Surf Club. The Surf Club has offered to open their doors and allow access to their facilities to accommodate the ABP attendees. The NJ Surf Show will pick up where the ABP leaves off, with a vendor exhibit of local surf brands on display. There are also plans for a clam bake and tow-at contest at the NJ Surf Show! Also, prizes for the ABP contest will be awarded at the Surf Show. Like NJ Surf Show on Facebook for more information. If you are a professional shaper (must have a tax ID number and be a registered business within the state you are located) and plan to attend, please contact me at rick@gallerysurfboards.com for some excellent opportunities we’ve negotiated for display booths at the Surf Show. If you are an east coast shaper from outside NJ and need to arrange for accommodations please feel free to contact me for help. Like Anything But Pop-Outs on Facebook for more information. Please spread the word and share this with your friends!!! http://www.facebook.com/AnythingButPopOuts?ref=ts
Good news!!! Forecast for Saturday right now is 70 degrees partly cloudy with light variable winds and a small SE swell. So the weather will be great to come to the beach in Ortley and see some locally made boards 8AM - 1PM and then the NJ Surf Show is after that. The event is rain or shine. If it nice out we will be on the beach in front of Surf Club. If it rains we will go inside Surf Club. Lots of local NJ shapers coming to this event. Wynn, Chaize, Gallery, Rozbern, Malwitz, Greenlight, Essence, and more!!! Just a reminder to the shapers for the ABP; no tents, banners, sales or flashy marketing, just boards and stoke! If you want to sell product there may be a few vendor spots left for the NJ Surf Show. Contact me if you need a vendor application. See you there!!!
this looks like a fun! out of curiosity, do people think "anything but pop outs" is a good name for this type of event? i am working on a marketing project and need a title, curious how this type of wording resonates <sorry to threadjack, maybe it will bump>
I like it better than the "anything but three" title of the last one I went to a few years ago. I had a couple of newly shaped boards I brought, and one of them had (gasp) 3 fins. I think the new title more accurately captures the point of the get-together.
