Since the IOC has pulled Tug-O-War, Live Pigeon Shooting, and my all time favorite, Syncronized Swimming, I feel as though they should consider surfing as a sport into the next summer games. I remember sometime back in the 80's they were considering it, does anyone know what came out of that and why? ________ headshops
i accually looked it up this morning and found this really good articles that makes some valid points. I just like anyone else on this site would love to see it work, i just dont it being possible http://www.geocities.com/surfer_ed/surfolympics.html
speaking of the olympics...who caught that mens 4x100 free relay? AMAZING!!! jason lezak owns that relay...splitting 46.00 are you kidding me...(i swim but if you dont know anything about swimming, it was incredible)
what if the country happens to be land locked? Or at least really far away from a coastline... It seems like most major countries end up having water access which is utilized in the form of ports for international trade but if some small country/land locked country hosted the summer games.... I'm not sure how that would work out. I gotta admit though, it would be pretty sweet to see surfing in the olympics.
since its like the olympics and all...unless the country is known for waves they would probably make a wave pool so the waves are always consistent
They can always use a power generated wave. I'm happy about this olympics, BMX is there. I get to watch some old friends race and crush the other countries into oblivion. Also just occurred to me, surfing is very American/Australian centric. They usually don't all sports in unless they are world wide. There have been exceptions though, so don't quote this and say them, I already know most of them
Ya they would have to build wave pools for the events. I mean it is kind of stupid that surfing is not a part of the Olympics. When surfing on the world tour it usually means you are in very very good physical shape. What I am trying to say it that good surfers are no fat asses... Maybe then it would be regarded as a real sport and someone with friggen 8 (soon to be 9) world titles would be considered as one of the best athletes in the world.
I think surfing gets its just due in regards to other sports. I've heard a couple of people on ESPN say Kelly Slater is one of the greatest athletes of all time. And I could have sworn he made it pretty far up the ladder in that "Best athlete ever" thing they did some months ago. Really surfing is such a relaxed sport it doesn't get full coverage. I mean there are tons of brilliant surfers that don't do tourneys because they would rather just surf for fun. Its how I am, although I'm not that good at surfing anyway. I go to have fun, drop on a wave, do a couple cut backs and fall. This is where surfing separates itself, it is a life style, not a sport really.
Duh The Olympics are games held every 4 years to see which countries are the best in which sports. As far as surfing goes-- its very similar to the games it that way.On every score sheet they have (AUS) or (USA) beside the names just like the Olympics and before the matches they show the competitors faces with their nations flags in the background?? ring a bell? Also, the competitors are always representing their home country by wearing their flag on their backs after victories(or screaming "ozzie, ozzie ozzie")the Dream tour is an Olympic game for surfing.
What the hell, they need to get rid of that stupid horse thing, where the rider rides around in a square. Surfing could deff. replace that!!!
They could have built several very nice wave pools with the money spent on the opening ceremonies. I have always thought water polo would be more fun to watch in a wave pool, give them a real reason to wear those sissy helmets.
dont knock water polo man. try treading water in place for over an hour... if you can do that then try it with people trying to steal a ball from you. those guys are machines
yea he dominated that thing man!!!!! i mean i got a 1 :57.79....but not even close to him...the olymlpics would be so cool to compete in but still a far dream for me...tyr is pushing for me though
theres wave pool technolgy in the works called "surf the ring". Pretty much the most awesome thing ever. 12 endless waves going at once. look it up. it would be perfect for olympic style competions. of course, its deffinetly not going to be a cheap thing to build just for the olympics but no doubt it would take in mad cash afterwards as wave park sor of deal
