Hey- I just got back from my first surf trip over to Bald Head Island and man does it have a sick set up. I have been wanting to go over there for the last couple of years now & finally did it. If you go all the way to East Beach where the Shoals Club is- you have the point of Cape Fear right there- that is where the East facing beaches meet with the South facing beaches- at this place there is a long sand point that has a sick point break set up at a mid to low tide. This place has some of the best potential that I've seen on the East Coast & I have surfed every state from Maine to Florida. It was only waist+ the day I went, but the rights were reeling down along the point for a 100 yards- some of the sickest waves I have ever seen here on the East Coast. It looked like a mini version of the Super Bank. Has anyone else ever surfed here? Let me know how it was & the best swell direction to get it good.

i imagine this place would be good on those common S/SW swells.

It looked to me that an East swell would be best- the day I went it was a NE/E swell. Probably an NE, E, or SE would have the point working. Did I mention that it is legal to camp right on the beach, I spoke with the Bald Head Island sherif department and they said it was ok- So just pitch a tent right in front of the point & there you go, you have a killer surf & camping trip

I've surf this break on S swell and ENE. S swell lefts light this place up if you THINK about it. All I can say is keep your eyes open because I have been ran out of the water countless times. Some of the biggest sharks and the most sharks I have ever seen, in one session.

There are other waves very similar to this along our coast that aint quite as sharky. THANK GOD THEY ARE ONLY ACCESSABLE BY BOAT.

I have seen some big shadows around those bars too, but when the winds are right it does go off.

I work at Bald Head and it barely ever breaks. I've only seen it waist high at best, and thats when it is chest/head everywhere else around. And it is very sharky. Those pics look like you caught it at a rare time, looks pretty fun actually. You'd have to be pretty lucky to catch it good, but do your hw and that might just happen; and you'll defintley have it all to yourself. :)

    Bald Head

yeah I surfed Bald Head a few times. The Shoals Club is the best area to surf. It breaks well on a east/south east swell altough it will hold a NE swell as well. It can be very fickle based on tide however since it does get so shallow there. It never gets crowded here since you have to take the ferry over so when it is good, it is wortth the trip!:)

ferry only from what i hear, and if you guys are going all the way to bald head , stop by the ocean creast pier, on oak island about 10 miles down the road.
