how unhealthy is the water off NJ going to be? anyone have any reasoned ideas on how long for bacteria to clear? given the failure of sewage plants along the coast and the massive flooding, it will much longer than after a heavy rain.
was wondering the same thing. When will it be ok to paddle out again i know everything pretty nasty right now
A long time... Aside from all the debris in the water, sewage plants all along the coast have leaked raw sewage into the ocean including nyc's. Also a tanker at Arthur's Kill leaked some 300,000 gallons of diesel fuel into the raritan bay. At this point if you want to go surfing go to va.
can anyone give us an accurate estimate? Like is there a website or something that gives details on water quality and etas and such.
I would check the EPA's website or the NJ Department of environmental protection http://www.nj.gov/dep/beaches/
i cant find any estimates but you can look up the half life to alot of the substances that are in the water now; the flooding is going to cause an insane amount of run off of different pesticides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and personal care products, not even considering the levels of antibiotics and other hormones already present in the watersheds. most of these compounds can mimic hormones in your body (endocrine disrupters) and really mess with you long term not just the normal sinus infection :/

I have been in the water Wednesday, Thursday and yesterday. I'm fine, the waters clear and seems clean at least. Swallowed some ocean water too. If I grow a third eye or turn green ill let you know. And what does silence please mean?
If you don't go... you'll never know. Went out Wednesday and Thursday after the storm. Epic conditions and private break since the National Guard was only letting local residents in.
Great to hear some positives. I'm guessing no issues with debris either? Hopefully people will be happy to see people surfing, a glimpse of what life was like before.
Don't surf - use your energy to help out some neighbors in need. There are plenty of people that need it - especially up here in the NY/NJ area.
Lol - no, any and all hands are needed here. It's tough to get into Long Beach, NY as they are only letting residents in, but go to any community in Rockaway, Southern Brooklyn, or Staten Island that needs help and volunteer your services. I'm sure they will gladly accept whether you're part of the "brotherhood" or not. I would imagine the same goes for NJ and even parts of Ocean City, MD.
I heard that one too...talk radio over the weekend. http://blog.al.com/breaking/2012/11/huntsville_utilities_denies_cl.html Looks like that rumor was not true
i tried to volunteer around monmouth county and they said they couldn't take anyone at this point. i'd assume it was because of potential liability issues. you can't just throw a bunch of people into a disaster area that are all gung-ho to help - they can easily get themselves hurt or killed.
i've heard conflicting reports and saw some nasty video of local union guys giving the visiting workers a really bad time. update--partially true: http://www.foxbusiness.com/governme...nj-causes-alabama-recovery-crew-to-head-home/
I live in Long Beach, NY. My place faired fairly well and it's been a lot of work work helping neighbors. Friends and I want to surf to keep morale up. I think its important.
