you're kidding, right? all the people who still have no power, no heat, some w/out a place to stay...nothing to protect the shore towns from overwash, the marshes are still full, so no chance of them absorbing the flood waters, storm drains still clogged, so the rain (2-3" predicted) will just sit, temps possibly down into the 20's...this is an awful scenario.

Exactly... I've never been so bummed about a NorEaster on the way. We can't handle it right now... Even if there is no flooding, the last thing we need up here is a cold storm. It's going to be brutal to those of us without power... We need nice warm weather to keep up cleaning and repairs.

Yes, and if all that's not enough, the water quality has to be horrible with all those waste treatment facilities down and tons of raw sewage being pumped into the water.

I got the itch to try and catch some swell...but it is next to impossible to get to the beaches. I dont think there is anyone of us out there who isint thinking about the waves coming, however small and short a thought it might be in our minds.. on a side not Im still with out power, thankfully a friend lent us a generator for some lights and the cast-iron pot belly stove is keeping us warm. Anyone feel that earthquake in Jersey? Sign of the times..

    i miss that thread....

ya, i am bummed too. Even tho all the sand bars look sooo much better... the area is a wreck... so many ppl without a home or a wreck of a home.

PLUS- with all the rain and run off- THE WATER IS CONTAMINATED!!! be careful not to get your head wet if you go- unless you like sinus infections, idk... I have been helping pump out some flooded basements - and it aint pretty. talk about seadumping... im not worried about the surf, too many ppl in need right now...

I think if you have the energy to surf right now you should be volunteering to help someone in need. I can't even think about surfing right now. I've got a bunch of new clothing I'm donating and am currently trying to find someone to give me a discount on wool blankets so I can buy a bunch and donate them. I've also been trying to find where I can volunteer as an RN or rescue to be of maxium service when I'm not working overtime do to this crisis.

Wait. What? If that's the thinking, nobody would ever surf. Or do anything fun. People are suffering all the time. All the time. Everyday. All around the world. Help when you can and how you can. Everyday. And then paddle out, enjoy your sesh and help some more. You gotta stay sane if you're gonna be of any use to anyone other than yourself...

The #Occupy people in the Rockaways are saying no donating/volunteering after 4pm because it gets too dangerous. On the nice side of town, Belle Harbor area, people have signs on their houses that say "If you enter we will shoot." Surfing in storm torn areas would be a great way to coax them back to normalcy, but I just don't think it's an option right now. Also, as others mentioned, the water in W.LI was nasty before the storm. It's totally toxic right now. #Bummer

It's a little different when the area that's most affected is the area your paddling out right in front of. I don't live in one of these areas, but I surf Long Beach and Rockaway, and will not be paddling out until these people have some sense of normalcy restored to their lives. Instead I will be using my energy to volunteer and help clean up/rebuild these areas. It might be different if you're a local and need to keep yourself sane, but if you're coming from somewhere else, you need to be helping out and not paddling out.

Most of the popular spots in Jersey are inaccessible anyways! It is different when it hits your home town.

+1 You gotta stay sane. I've been helping as much as I can and could use a taste of what normal life was like. Biggest concern is water quality and getting sick.

Just take a swig, you'll know right away if it's good or not, one little gulp won't hurt right?

As of today, the NY/NJ Baykeeper said, "Don't swim, don't fish, don't touch... don't go anywhere near the water" in the harbor/bay area, and advised waiting, "at least another week before going into the ocean" in the areas around the Bay.

The moral question of whether you should surf or not is a personal choice. The health and safety of surfing in waters known to be contaminated is a bit more concrete... but still not absolute. Tides, winds, swells... all affect the dispersal of contaminates.
