After reading about all the attacks, and getting texts from friends about two great whites being caught on Manhattan Beach the other day.... I said, yea, whatever. And went out to El Porto yesterday.

I squealed like the biggest bi_atch ever when three dolphins popped up right next to me with their fins.

ROFL. That's happened to me too.
Glad I'm not the only one who gets tripped out when you you see a group of fins. LOL

Mary Lee, a 16 ft Carcharodon carcharias has been hanging around our beaches in Charleston for the past 24 hours. Check out http://sharks-ocearch.verite.com/ to see where she is. This is the same one that was messing around Cape Cod to NC in the past weeks.

I was out there Saturday (IOP North), pretending to have fun in the flat crap surf. My friends were all freaked out when I told them I had spent a few hours surfing. I didn't even hear about the shark off the coast, but it wouldn't have stopped me from going out. It was well off shore, and I am doubting the food supply for that beast is better near the beach.
That said, I really hope the surf picks up soon. It is painfully flat out there, and the big surf moved the sandbars. Now the little stuff is breaking in super shallow water, so even using a long board is difficult.

Following the back track of Mary Lee it looks like she went way up a creek in Charleston Harbor. What's up with that?

I won't say it's common but about 3-4 years ago a great white washed up behind Morris island right next to folly. It got beached when the tide rolled out and died. I really don't know what the reasoning or food source could be... We also get manatees around this time of year in the rivers. Maybe that's like a really fat seal or something. Glad she's on her way nevertheless.

was there some kind of bug with it's tracker? it showed that thing going way up an estuary. I know bulls do that but great whites? I doubt it

One of the local marine biology groups said it is uncommon, but it has happen before. It was all the way up in a creek in Daniel Island. I am guessing the best food up there would be a manatee or a dolphin.

70 million sharks slaughtered by humans each & every year.

1 Kiwi sponger gets wacked by a fish.

Nothin' for nothin'? It's pretty obvious which entity is 'threatened.'

I was camping at Matapalo in 98 when some guys from Cali we met in Dominical showed up. there 1 paddle out and come in spot so we all jumped in together. as we were paddling out a bunch of small fish jumped out around us. One of the guys yells"Anchovies! getting some for a pizza" and plunged his hand down in the middle. he was bit a bunch of times before he could pull back. we all went in and wrapped his hand up and sent them to the tattoo guy in Puerto Jimenez. Others were reluctant to go out but getting the place all to myself was unusual so I paddled out. a few yards from the beach a giant wad of fish blasted out in front of me. I turned around as fast as I could. Matapalo hates me.
