Spend a little extra and get the real "Beater Board" from Catch Surf. It costs more, but the quality should make up for it. My neighbor bought one for shore break and it is more fun than you would think. I have had my eye on their log for some time - I just can't pull the trigger.

I have a beater and they're really fun. I haven't bothered to take it out this month (it's best in the summer when the waves are sucky and the water's warm). But dlrouen I just got a catch surf log 7'! I haven't gotten a chance to surf it yet but it looks and feels pretty good. It's a lot different than like a Costco board (which was my biggest fear). Anyway if you're looking for a beater type board I'd check out the catch surf but also iNT beater boards. They're a little more expensive but are made in the US and look pretty fun.

 

From trying out beaters and other types of summer blackball boards, they do not work as well as bodyboards. Beaters are great for lightweight kids but anything over 150 lbs they look bad and have no drive. They kinda slide out more.

My favorite standup bodyboard is a 46 inch Congo Bullet. The bodyboards tail and rails were meant for finless surfing. A standard 42 inch has more hold but in the 46 range there is more paddle power. It is wider throughout the board for more planing surface. And you would be suprised at the steep drops that can be made standup bodyboarding. I am 180 lbs so the 46 is perfect but you can get 42-50 inch. I would reccomend congo bullet model with bottom channels.

this clip is the congo 46 on small summer days you can do prone or standup or whatever but it is really fun in shorebreak or weak windswelly waves anywhere. I dont like standup booging in the winter because of the extra weight and loss of mobility of a wetsuit.

 

Toobs Herlihy hands down. Had mine for 7 years now, no broken stringers, just tons of skimming, shore break barrels, and stand up sessions.

 

Neat board, my buddy has one of those, fun for DK and prone, haven't tried it stand up but it definitely has more paddle power/buoyancy than my sponges due to the length(46 I think). Cool vid, that Congo looks fun.

 

go with the beater, it's a blast. once you get the hang of it, you won't slide out at all.

 

I found with the beater you really gotta have your back foot centered over the channels, otherwise youll slide out every time. I tried the first version and it seemed pretty flimsy but I think they made it a little more sturdy. Its all about the price range really. I like a shorter board with more width just like I do with my surfboards.
