I'm starting the college process and have my heart set on California. I know that the cal state school's are nearly impossible to get in to if you live out of state. So my question is does anyone know/have any experience with private schools out there that are willing to take out of state students?
no cars for your first year either... you might also want to check out hawaii. they're actually trying to get more out of state students in
If your main intention is surfing, I'd look into some of the UC's, like santa cruz, santa barbara, or san deigo.. I'm on the same boat. Looking into colleges and will not budge from my plan of going to california..
Or move to Cali after high school, get a low pay job for a year while you surf, to establish residency, then apply as a resident. Any buddies you could bunk with for a year?
University of San Diego is a good rec. You should try UCSB, UCSC, and UCSD. You can do the community college thing for a year and then transfer to a UC school. That way you can get residency.
Here you go....this may help... http://www.surfline.com/surf-news/official-guide-to-surf-colleges-at-the-beach_25098/
i go to ucsb, am from new jersey, surf all the time and love it. you cant look just into wanting to surf 24/7 bc you know the truth is there arent always waves. but if thats your only factor then you have to look at consistency. more consistent look to either san diego for the warm water or santa cruz for the cold water. santa barbara gets world class waves all year but not as consistently. but when they do, theyre along 300 yard point breaks and are the best rides youll ever get. what else do you like to do though? san diego is not really that much fun until youre older and able to go out to bars and clubs legally. santa cruz is full of a level of hippy pot smokers you will have never even thought existed. and santa barbara has a little of everything but mostly a crazy drunken party scene on del playa drive which is right on the beach. all of the UC schools are pretty hard to get into from outta state but they want your money! i had a 1850 SAT and a 3.6 gpa and i got into ucsb. if youre not the best at school and want to move out here look in to the community colleges here. theyre much more academically challenging than the ones on the east coast. id suggest venture community college. ps. try to get a car out here if you plan to surf alot. you will be chasing the swell alot to find the best size and conditions and that could be a pretty far drive.
Also, if you wanna see what the waves at ucsb have to offer, watch this cam on the link below on tuesday the 2nd and weds the 3rd. this is campus point (hint: its on campus). surfline is calling for for 4 to 6 and swellinfo predicts chest high. the sites always underforecast santa barbara though. http://www.ucen.ucsb.edu/surfcam.html
If I had it over to do I would take Betty's advice. Almost 7 years out if school and still working on my student loans. There is a lot of growing up to do between high school and graduating college and you don't necessarily need to do it with a whole bunch of other 18 year olds who don't know what they want to do. That being said, if you know what you want to study and find a school that has your major, more power to you. If you're looking for a pseudo-free (you'll pay it back later) vacation party maybe you should take some time off to figure out what you want to do, save some money, travel, join the peace corp or something. College is not the time where you figure out what you want to be, it should be where you hone your skills and figure out how to make money for the rest of your life. So basically, find some roomies, surf a lot, go on as many trips as possible but keep your eye on the prize. When you figure out what it is you really want, go 100% and really focus in on it and do what you want to do.

What happened to 1600 max on the SATs? Do you still get 400 for getting your name right?
All the info these guys gave great information that you should take into account. Unless, your a bad ass surfer and can make a living off it or want to go into a surf related career, keep your eyes on what else you want to do. It's awesome if these schools have your major and you know what you want to do, then go for it. Even if your not sure what you want to do then move out there and take your core classes at community college to save money because college is expensive. Surfing is my life, I'm gonna be doing it hopefully till I'm old and grey, but it does not pay the bills. Life is short dude, follow your dreams, move out there, and if you work hard enough you will get what you want. Good luck bro fyi - core classes are class that every school requires, for example, english 1 and 2, math, sciences etc., anything that will transfer.
