At what water temperature is it necessary to wear a wetsuit, and when do you need to wear booties and/or gloves. I'm planning on getting a fullsuit for surfing winter here at Wrightsville Beach, NC and I won't be able to afford any other spring suits also - Just 1 fullsuit.

Also, air temp plays a big role too, right?

post this question in the southeast forum, so you can get some local advice.

generally you can go trunks until the water gets into the mid to upper 60s or so. This is probobally late Fall for you guys in southern NC.

I don't think there is a formula for what temp you should wear a wetsuit. Its personal preference if you ask me. I surf in southern CA and I see guys wearing booties and full suits year round and our water temp peaks around 70 or so. I wore my full suit yestarday and the water was 67. But it was late in the day after work and the sun was setting. On the weekends, mid-day I will were just board shorts and a rash guard with the same water temp. But a 1mm vest is always nice to have as well instead of a rash guard.

It depends on how well you can handle the cold. I would rather be too warm then freeze my jewls off.
