Why this forum is worthless...

I think the reason why people dont talk about secret spots is because they understand what the sport of surfing will do to that area. Yes it can bring in revenue but it also brings crowds not just in the line up but in that area alone. Some people want the Country to stay Country thats all.

 

I actually missed posting on here for two years. Not a lot of Southern Cal people on here, but I know the spots anyway. Anywhere from Venice down to Seal Beach, and into Newport. And some of the spots near San Diego where I lived when I first moved out here. I love this forum, but I could do without so much political talk haha!

I'll spill the beans on anywhere in the world I have been unless I promised to someone I wouldn't...but it's different closer to home...Hmm....how to put it? People I want to surf with...family...friends...not you. If you're there and we share waves...cool. Its east coast not Hawaii...I'm not one to fight over knee high waves...but also not one to tell everyone to show up where I am surfing either...

That's why nobody is blabbing about their spot. And bro, everyone in my local lineup is my buddy. Unless they aren't.

yeah man, i've never been on right coast, but there is definitely a different vibe from out here on the left coast. maybe it is because there are so many spots here in any 50 mile stretch it does get crowded here, but apparently not like it does there....and hell, all the spots out here have been named in beach boys songs anyway...

 

Actually, opposite. There are hardly any proper crowds here, just as there hardly any 'proper' waves here as well. The attitudes are much easier than what I've experienced in the rock stat state of CA. Further south it's what I like to call 'rednecks with fins' type of crowd, which is better than all the ****s in CA line up, just about anywhere south of Bay Bridge. It's easy to spread out many places around here that lack reefs or points (like where I live) because it breaks all the time everywhere. Winters are quiet, cold temps keep every surfing wannabe out. There are hardly any 'secret' spots. If you can drive to it and it doesn't include scaling cliffs, it's not a secret.
I don't care how many people show up at the bar I usually do, most time I recognize many. You can always more little further (and it will come to you) or just employ an internal clock of justice, like I do. When it's time, it's time, and I am paddling in regardless of how many are going for it. But for the most part it's all good.

 

Not giving up the spots I frequent that are relatively uncrowded.

 

Writing on a forum that is "useless" is hypocrisy at its best.

Although, It doesn't sound like that is what you really meant, and I think we get the point of your argument. Surfing is for everyone, don't be a douche and think you own your spot.

I have said this before, if you think of waves as limited valuable resources, like water or oil, then some logic can be made. So, in some places there is high demand and low supply of good waves, so I think it is logical that this drives competitiveness for the resources. This doesn't mean some people still aren't douches for claiming territory that isn't theirs, but it does seem more understandable why the behavior exists.

It's pretty obvious why you don't talk up surfing spots. There's fishing forums I belong to that will ban you for "spot-burning" and I totally agree with the train of thought. In the days of the internet, there's no such thing as legwork or learning for yourself. Sure many don't abuse it, but there's tons more who pay no attention to wind, tide, swell direction, sand bars, etc... they just consult SwellInfo or Surfline or whatever. Gone are the days of scoping out sandbars at low tide (both fishing and surfing) as well as actually checking the surf (for many internet abusers).


This is bad for many reasons. For one, there are many beginners on websites like this, and they might be better served if they found their own spots to surf... just until they are better and can handle navigating a crowded lineup where the waves are at a higher premium. For another... who wants to get invaded at their home break once internet word gets around that their spot was going off on a certain day? It happens and is a royal pain in the ass. When I moved to where I live and was ignorant of which spots were which and was trying to drive around and scope things out, the best advice wasn't, "go to street A or B on a south or north" it was "pick a jetty". If a place is working or holding a great wave consistently... go tell your surfing buddies. Don't blast it on the ridiculous internet.

for the record... I don't think that this thread was intended as a legit topic. I think it was sort of like, hey what can I post that will get everyone fired up and posting about.... while I sit waaaaaaaay outside and pick off the best waves on my log. lol.

In my opinion, there are no secret spots left anywhere. I mean, there really aren't. With Google Earth, we have nailed pretty much every nook and cranny on earth. Spending 10 years in CA surfing everyday, I will be the first to say, there are ZERO secret spots left there. Some are very "Protected", but everyone knows where they are or can do a quick google search to find them. No secrets in Santa Cruz either, regardless of what people tell you. There are places like "The Ranch" that are "PRIVATE" like all of HHI, but there are no secrets left... Luckily for CA, most of the "secret" or "protected" spots get so heavy when its on, that regardless of how easy you find it, the novice or "average" surfer would A) Probably not paddle out and B) Never get a wave when the locals are out... Too heavy and too easily out positioned by locals...

I think on the east coast as a whole, people get pissed because sand bars come and go... There are no Secrets on the east either, but some seasons, spots get great while others lie dormant, so I think a lot of locals back around here get pissed when people "blow a spot up", meaning, coming onto the forum and talking about exactly where the sand bar has been firing a few days before a good swell, and then the place they had between them and a couple friends turns into 12-15 heads.... Its no "secrets" really, its just guys getting pissed when their backyards get full because of forum talk....

I dont mind it really. Not to "Blow Spots up" but down on Hilton Head, ive kind of been jonesing for some company in the water... My last 4-5 sessions have been really fun, chest high, perfect conditions with no one out... I know it sounds crazy, but sometimes Im like, damn, can I get another surfer out here. While I enjoying taking EVERY way that hits down here, its just culture shock coming from San Diego... The swells aren't epic like this time of year back west, but that leads me into the question: "Do you take HH+" waves with 20 guys on it, or do you take waist to chest high waves, alone, able to take every one that comes in.... I miss barrels and airs, but I have been having fun on the LB and FISH for sure in between solid swells.
