I concur. since they removed the poop chutes from the dunes between 79 & 80, the bars are gone Big old beach but mostly on the shore break.
Yea lee that dredging pier at 61st was awesome. i surfed there whenever it was big. hell of a lot less people and the sand bar on the south side was sweet. got a few nice barrels there last summer....
A lot less people than where, 1st street? Those piers always seemed crowded to me. I saw two things happen there that made me never want to go back. Yeah the sand piled up around them and they did, especially on small days, jack up into nice little faces. However, I saw a grown man get written a trespassing ticket for just barely flirting with the 300 feet no trespassing zone. I shared waves with that man all day, for 3 hours, and he never went into that no trespassing zone. He takes his final wave in and ends up in the zone for a fraction of a minute and gets written a trespassing ticket by some useless whale of a cop. Now I'm not a cop hater, quite the opposite, but I am a useless blubbery whale hater so it worked out in this case that I was allowed to hate the cop. I walked past the old man and we both shook our heads in disgust while this pork sausage fingered bulbous little man scribbled away. Really disheartening. And then another day I was there I saw a 16-18 year old girl being an absolutely wreckless wave hog. Mind you it was summer and the pier was ridiculously crowded with surfers as well as bathers playing the surf, many of them young children. The waves were jacking up and breaking into the shorebreak, so riding a wave required a bit of carefulness to avoid running anyone over. This is Virginia, so you can't expect people to yield to you riding a tiny little 3 foot shorebreak... Well after she had dropped in on a dozen people within a half hour or so and probably barely missed a few swimmers, I notice a bunch of ruckus on the beach. Turns out she lost her board in one of those aggro hacks she was throwing and she found it when it came back down on her head. It was quite the transformation from aggro surfer to laid out helpless victim (of her own stupidity). Hopefully they build another one though, the cops don't seem to come out in the winter as bad and obviously the ridiculously aggro 3 foot wave riding chargers aren't going to be out in full force either.
Unfortunately, I think the days of piers on the North End are over. They only built them on runoff sites, which there were only two of, 79th and 62nd.
