thinking of buying a ticket to Hawaii in the may-june range. anyone know what can i expect wave-wise?
May can give you a little North and South swell. June really heats up for the South side. First week of June the Duke Kahanumoku festival is held, so expect crowds if you visit at this time. Have fun!
Yarrrr, hopefully you get some South. I spent two years living there, and the spring swell were pretty inconsistent but a really fun time when they happened. Hope you git some!
UPDATE: i'll be staying with a buddy in Wailuku on the north shore of Maui. any insight on the waves/area would be appreciated.
I used to live right near Wailuku. Maui doesn't really pick up the south swells that are more common during that time frame as well as Oahu. Sometimes some fun waves will sneak through to the Lahaina and Kihei side for chest high days. Every now and then a strong swell with perfect swell direction will light up the south, but I would plan on some fun long boarding waves, maybe a little bigger if you're lucky. Maybe fly over to Oahu for a couple of days if it gets good, it's not very expensive once you're there and it can really cook on a south swell. Have fun exploring! Check out the volcano, drive through Kula so you can smell the lavender farms. There's some KILLER eats in Paia. Tell everyone I miss them very much and will see them again.
You'll get waves. Its true the North Shore is done by then but "done" standards on the north shore sometimes rival fun standards everywhere else. If theres not waves on the North, theres a spot called goat island that picks up windswell year round on the east side, and theres an insanely fun body surfing waves called Pounders on the east side as well. As for the south shore, theres a couple fun waves right in front of the biggest mall in Honolulu called Ala Moana. You'll most likely have fun if you go.
save your money and go out in the fall or winter for North Shore Oahu swell. Just got back, had to stop paddling out once that last big swell hit. Waimea was breaking 15-18 ft. (30 foot faces). Missed watching Slater surf it by two hours!
wally - i'd love to wait until fall/winter - but my job is such that i don't work summers. in addition, my current lease ends in may, so i'll wait for my trip to end before signing another. financially it just makes way more sense to go may-june.
