I was wondering if anyone has recommendations for good quality earplugs that will keep water out and not fall out during a bigger sesh. I have Ménière's disease and have had vertigo for the past 10 years or so as a result of it as well as tinnitus (permanent ringing). Since moving back to San Diego, the colder water has been getting trapped in my left ear and I want to prevent further permanent damage. If anyone has some good advice it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Keith
Sorry man, wish I could help ya. My dad's a big trap shooter(ya know, w/ the clay pigeons) and he has tinnitus also. I know for shooting there are special ones you can have made form fitted to your ear, IDK, maybe look into going that route?
Doc's Pro Plugs work well. They are ik 12 bucks or smething. I use them and never had a problem with them falling out. It takes some getting used to surfing with earplugs, based on my experience. It threw off my balance just a bit at first, but then I got used to it. Now I wear them all the time when I'm not wearing a hood.
I have exostosis in both ears and have been wearing Docs for the last 25 years nothing better in my book.. http://www.swimoutlet.com/product_p/10622.htm Just make sure you get the right size I can do medium or large and they never fall out, you just have to tuck them in right. The xl's hurt my ears a bit.
I have popped each one of my ear drums over the past two years (left one surfing two years ago and right one being an idiot off a diving board this summer). I could not find an ear plug that provided a complete seal from water. A lot can provide protection from impact and lessen water... but some seems to always get in... good luck
I can't recommend Doc's Pro Plugs enough ... they work really, really well. Heck, I was out on Sunday, in 44-degree water with no hood in chest-to-shoulder high waves (on the largest sets), and had no issues with water in my ears. Cold water on the ear-drums is not fun, so I would know if they leaked. They don't. They also don't seem to come out in wipe-outs either (hasn't happened yet at least, and I've been tumbled quite a few times). At first sight they might not seem like they would work because the design is so simple, but if you get the proper size for your ears, you'll be pleasantly surprised at their effectiveness. There is a fitting kit you can get for $8 that allows you to try on a bunch of different sizes rather than guess at what size you are. Once you've found the perfect fit, you can then order the correct pair (I would order a couple just in case one fell out in a really bad wipe-out).
Starting this winter, I just started having feelings of vertigo and almost passing out in class and at work. I had to go to the ER one day because it was so bad. I only feel nauses when i am sitting down though but i have noticed certain noises seem louder and sudden. maybe i should start wearing earplugs....
Doc pro plugs is your answer. I suffer from some the same symptoms. They come with a leash that connects them to each other so if one does pop out, you don't loose them. Very rarely do I loose one, but when i do 9 out of 10 times i found them in the tide line since they float. Sinus surgery fixed my vertigo - but there is new research about the crystals in your ear where they can fix vertigo. Tinnitus is really effected by diet, especially salt, caffiene.
