Assateague island, MD has beachside camping and usually user-friendly surf.

Anywhere along the East coast. Thanks- I'll check it out.
We are in KY so we are looking at a 10 hr drive minimum anyway you look at it. I have this recurring notion of me and the family taking a surfing/camping vacation.

You can't go wrong with the outer banks either, there are several beachside campgrounds down toward the cape.

for beginners, I'd say Fort Story in VB. It's right behind Cape Henry Lighthouse.

Agree. But, check the Assateague and Cape Hatteras National Seashore sites on-line for campsite availability (sites are bought up way in advance during peak season) and the NS sites are not open year round. There are also some decent private campgrounds in the Lighthouse area (Buxton and Frisco) and up north in Rodanthe (these tend to be more RV-oriented).

I'll second the suggestion for False Cape in VA ... heading further south on the OBX towards the cape, especially south of the Oregon Inlet, can get a little heavy for your first time out depending on the swell characteristics. Let's just say that while it can be big anywhere along the coast, add a good 2-3ft to the surf at Rodanthe or Hatteras vs. VA Beach.

I've surfed waisted high (3' faces) waves on false cape in the middle of summer when flat on all the cams
