    To the OP

Watched your video a couple times, you both took off at nearly the same time, but he was deeper...so your in the wrong. But it's a learning process, he was far enough away from you, that you didn't cause him to bail or worse, cause bodily injury. I would say your fine, if the situation ever arises again, as soon as you realize someone is deeper, just pop back off the wave...no harm, no foul.

as for Sunny Garcia, I think he is a damn good surfer, but an immature hothead. You fight another man mano e mano, but you don't beat up somebody else's kid. Just my $.02.

Can't really tell from the video to give any opinion, but just want to point out if it hasn't been already, that anyone with a Go Pro on their board is likely to be given hassle. Unless you are really good, then people will respect you.
But being new to surfing and having a Go Pro on your board is almost identical to dropping in on the most respected surfer in the lineup. lol.

Just like real estate it is all about location. Right break means you were in the wrong spot. Some guys will cut you some slack and just skate around you...I try to be as forgiving as possible.
Challenging the guy on the beach was way out of line. If you see him again you should apologize.

who cares... wont be the last time you cut someone off, or the last time you get cut off. The problem was that you thought you needed to go and make things worse by chasing him down the beach. People don't like to be told negative things, esp from someone who has been surfing for 6 months. The biggest problem here is that you went out of your way to run your mouth. You cut him off and then went up to him on the beach and gave him a lecture? You are very lucky you didn't get punched out, and If I were you I would not surf there again for a while. I'm so tired of these priority BS posts, the waves are not "your waves" or "my waves", no one owns nature. That is where the problem starts, people thinking they are owed something or that they have staked some claim at their local surf break. Surfing is not about "setting things straight", its about going with the flow of nature. If you want to "set things straight" go be an accountant. Between the Go Pro and your explanation of what happened, you have completely missed the point of surfing.

yeah safety if your surfing Pipe. Safety has nothing to do with it when its waist high, you are just using that as an excuse like everyone else does so you don't have to battle for waves. "we need it to be safe" lets all play by the rules and make sure everyone gets even amounts of waves blah blah blah. Again someone misses the point, there are no RULES in place. "Rules, Priority, setting the record straight" This sounds like something the IRS would come up with. I am very glad I don't view surfing the way you all do.

I've watched someone get hit in the head with a surfboard and nearly drown when it was right around waist high. His heart was stopped on the beach as we started performing CPR. Luckily, EMTs arrived quickly and utilized a defibrillator to save his life.

Safety has everything to do with it. Respect the ocean, even when it's flat.

so you're saying that if a kook like me with my gopro on the nose of my board comes zooming down the drop in while you're on the inside and I don't drop off you're gonna be cool w that? I agree with the others... rules are in place for a reason. Hence... why I posted this in the first place. I'm learning, and I need to know these things.

I try to have a good attitude out there and am usually very respectful of others but it's hard when you don't know the rules. We all just wanna chill and have a good time, right?

For some reason that particular day I opened my mouth - the only time I've ever done that over a wave. Maybe I took on too much water that day, idk. Maybe it was just the overall vibe at swamis?

This is why we have rules. No one needs to drown or get a fin up their a**. The ocean itself is a dangerous place and if you don't realize that, then you need to stay on shore.
