I am writing a dissertation with a topic ''HOW SHARK PRESENCE AFFECTS PARTICIPATION IN WATER SPORTS'' I would like to do small email interviews with few surfers from around the world. Thats easy....It doesn't. Their in the water...You're in the water. You don't think about it till you actually see one then you become more aware of your surroundings. I've only left the water once in my years of ocean going when I was bumped by a Bull Shark who was chasing bait fish.
With all due respect, Linda: if "shark presence" affected participation in water sports, then no one would surf. Ergo, shouldn't you be interviewing the people who don't surf or who won't enter the ocean because of "shark presence?" Not being snarky. Or even sharky. Best of success with your dissertation.
Yankee I don't agree totally. There is definitely a measurement to be made purely in the surfing population as to what level of shark activity surfers would not enter. Ranging from a shark sighting to keeping a person out of the water to total disregard to such news and surfing anyway.
I hear you, Fitz. Point taken. I would say, though, that most surfers are going in & staying in until they actually see a dorsal or, lawd forbid, somebody gets nipped or chomped. BTW, there's probably more than a few guys who check out the recent travels of MaryLee with sort of a morbid fascination - - and then go surf, as always. I drove onto the beach at Assateague a couple of years ago. Early morn, guy was driving his rig towards the exit & he stopped for a brief chat. He said he caught it good but then a couple of dorsals appeared & that was enough for him & he went for breakfast. I waited for awhile, didn't see anything, went surfing. I guess Linda's dissertation is probably an interesting idea then.
