Hi – I’m a technology entrepreneur that has had a passion all my life for surfing, but almost broke my neck four years ago (this month actually), and “shouldn’t” ever surf again to be safe… I have started a channel on YouTube – www.YouTube.com/JunoPierSurfing to promote local surfers at no charge. I don’t need the money, and it’s my way of giving back to the surfing community as a whole. It wasn't the best day, but decent. I only had about 45 min to shoot some video on this one... And, I missed a few good rides because some tourist kept wanting to talk to me... Will change POV as much as possible, but it will still be somewhat limited...
By the way, my purpose in starting this, and for doing future video's isn't to chronicle only the best days... The purpose is to capture friends, locals, and others' time in the water and share it in a somewhat professional manner, so they can enjoy something that otherwise they wouldn't normally see, "their time in the water"...
Thanks much... I look fwd to posting many more videos... I have some older, less professional stuff of the Pier and Hurricane Sandy that I'll clean up a bit and post... I've surfed all over and lived in Hawaii, but a near fatal neck injury changed everything for me... I'm just glad I'm 100% for weight training in the gym, and offshore fishing, my new physical passions, but really shouldn't ever surf again, due to the risk.... It's taken me 4 years to come to full grips with that, and it hasn't been easy... But, I told myself, I'd rather have myself 100% minus surfing, than be, omg, in a wheelchair from a 2nd accident...
Right on OP...I think that's an awesome idea and a great way to give back. Sorry to hear about your injury. That water looks so inviting right now.
Ha, yeah it's nice, and most of us only where one cause we are florida boys and can't take it lol....it was like 70 degrees in the air and like 72 in the water that day.
It's interesting... All my life, somehow, an offshore wind and swell was almost spiritual, be it Florida or Hawaii, it just resonated with my core....... Even if it was only an okay swell, close out, whatever... If the winds were offshore, I felt I should be there... Hard to describe...
Quad, Para, or partial? Trust me when I say I can relate. As for production values, nice steady camera work, but lighten up on the transitions. The more bells and whistles you try to utilize, the more you cheapen the product. Ever hear of Delaware Surfer/Photographer/Journalist Bill Wise? He broke his neck in South Bethany making him a quad, so he turned to a camera mounted on his wheelchair and became a journalist just so he could stay close to surfing. Mickey Munoz and Hobie Alter even strapped him to a pontoon of a Hobie Cat once for some wild wave riding. http://www.billwisesurfs.com/
Not to many Photographers around down here. Only a matter of time before I get my hands on a housing. Late afternoons on the good days drive me crazy not having the gear I want. Couple of strait up rippers around my way. Not having a solid bag built in some time, I find myself painting. Good stuff JunoPierSurfing, MDSurfer. Made it almost 3 years down here without wearing rubber.

Hey, thanks for all the feedback, personal and video editing as well... I'm actually 95% fine, I go to the gym 3-5 times a week, very aggressive workouts. I fish offshore, even for Marlin and Tuna... The only remaining problem that I "notice" is I still don't have full neck rotation without pain 4 years later, and I hear a grinding sound in my neck when I look left and right (weird thing). The MD's say "one bad fall and it would likely be over"... So, after a long time of thinking about it, I made a firm decision to not surf again. I do many many great things in my life still, and don't want to take the risk and end up in a wheelchair for the rest of my life... So, here I am, shooting video on the good days, because usually that means I'm not going to go offshore on my boat and I get to relive the fun and pure joy through you guys... ...and I'm really enjoying the video editing...
I acutally have a 1962 10'9" Hobie Alter board... Bought it at a surf shop that was going out of business in August of 1985, for only $150, in crazy good condition... Of course it weighs a zillion pounds and has a solid wood fin and a stringer a nun could kill you with, but it's pretty cool... I even wrote Hobie in Dana Point and have a letter on the board...
